Best medicine for sick cichlid

how do you put down a sick fish? from fishing, i hit the trout over the head to knock them out with a stick, but do you just flush them down the toilet?
No. Severe the spinal column just above the head or use clove oil. Flushing them to the toilet is very much inhumane.

I get cold water thats been in freezer for a while, were its about 33 degrees. After i put it in their after about 5-10 seconds their motionless. The temp. shock does them in. After 5-10 min after i'm 100% sure its dead, then i flush. I know method works well for small, slim tropical fish. May not work very well for larger or non tropical fish.

Any more opinions about my sick fish issue. I know i need to invest in good test kit. I normally dont pay more than $4 bucks a fish, in most cases.

hmm... i dont plan on putting any fish down atm, but its good to know... maybe a stick for humanly putting down a sick or dying fish?

I've used this method for fish up to 3'' so far with slim fish. Not sure about anything larger or fatter. For those fish it could take alittle longer; if so then it may not be best method.

i find that the best way to "put down a fish" is in a bowl with two alkazeltzer tabs, i only takes about 3-5 seconds for the fish to die completely and i thik there is alot less suffering invloved.i personally could not smash or cut my fish and i think the freezing water is cruel.

Wow, this is really a discussion for another thread. I'm glad that your method works, and thats cool. While my ice cold water method may take seconds longer than the alkazelter tabs method; how does that make my method cruel? Just my opinion thou. After 5-10 or maybe 15 seconds the fish is motionless. I just leave in water longer to be sure. Yes their maybe some brief pain. Who knows fo sure. Your method may provide very brief pain also. who knows.
Now again i havnent tried on fish bigger than 3'' long. That may be cruel on other fish..
Just an opinion thou.

In my opinion, just sticking a fish in a freezer is cruel. Flushing while alive is cruel. Taking a fish out of water to die out of water is cruel. All this takes much longer for a fish too die..
Just my opinion though.

Anyways on my original post about the 2 sick fish. The fact that they maybe sick may make people reading thread think i'm cruel because i've not been checking all water parmeters concistantly like i should. And that would be their opinion. They may be right.
But thats why i started thread to get some advice and opinions.
This has been good discussion though. If any more advice, i'll check tomorrow. Thanks.

Isn't it wonderful how easily distracting something can be!
At least that jerk wasn't back on here suggesting a blender for euthanization! LOL

It sounds like your water is not clean enough. Judging by your previouse mentioning of letting your filter cartridges go so long.
Your water changes are frequent enough..if your filter system is functioning efficiently.

Bacteria/fungas and or parasites are affecting the stomachs of your fish. They are basically starving along with what sounds like fungal problems.

Get new filter pads and feed your fish what they like the most two to three times a day to try and fatten them up. there are internal parasite medications that you can mix with their food to medicate them if they show signs of parasites in their feces.

Good luck!
