I want to do a moss wall for my 5 gallon tank but I had no idea there were so many types of moss. I want something that grows in pretty thick and would offer good fry coverage that would do well with just over 2 watts per gallon lighting.

I saw I wasnt the only one thinking about this today, I read the living wall post and read the article suggested and that is pretty much what I had planned on doing, but with plastic canvas.

i suggest Java moss :) i read your other thread and i think you already know what to do to create a moss wall on your tank

I used Christmas moss.
I had it for a few months and decided it was too much of a pain to keep clean. They hold a lot of debris and should really be removed and rinsed out once a week IMO.

I personally think fissidens are some of the coolest looking moss. Or flame moss.

In terms of easy to find, though, christmas or java would be best.

I'm with the above poster though. I just removed all the moss from my tank. Was a pita to keep clean and it go tangled up in everything else (was infesting my dwarf hairgrass, which is why I got rid of the stuff).

Good luck though, moss walls definitely look cool :D

Christmas moss is really great for moss walls but Taiwan moss looks very similar is easier to find and usually cheaper too!

I've kept all of the mosses mentioned above and I find that Java moss to be a little too unkempt for a moss wall. It does grow fast but the look is "messier" compared to the other mosses. Christmas moss has a nicer pattern of growth. Christmas moss branches can go on and on if you don't trim them often. I have enough flame moss and almost enough weeping moss for a 5"x5" patch of wall but haven't tried them yet. I predict they would give nice patterns also. A wall of subwassertang or pellia is also something I would like to try, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Oh, and fissidens does not grow dense enough to look good in a moss wall.

I figured the Christmas moss would be a little to long for what I was after and hadnt thought about the pellia. I have come across it on eBay a few times and it looks really neat and I plan on getting some just to grow. I think Im going to go with the flame moss and see how that goes. Ive thought about doing a few different types mixed together too to give it some variety.

Watch and don't buy from AQUAMAGIC, I ordered 2 items from them, and both were destroyed by customs ( no declaration or sterilization certificate). They politely refunded, but you can save yourself a two week wait and a refund by ordering from a stateside company.
