best plant substrate???

It really has to do with the application. In an ADA type plantscape, sure I would agree that ADA soil is most likely the best for the plants. In a stocked community tank that is planted, I don't think it would be as suitable. I use a 60/40 mix of Eco-Complete Planted and 1/16"-1/8" natural gravel. It seems to work quite well.
it can work..... its very costly..... but thats not what he asked lol...... eco would be my next choice since you dont have to wash it as much as flourite.

ADA is the best, there is no question.

I use Soilmaster Select. Nice CEC, dirt cheap. Turface is another soil additive that is used in aquariums, and I think it's CEC is a little higher than SMS's.

<---Used flourite, wishing he hadn't. In hindsight I should have just paid the few extra dollars and gotten eco. Three water changes in two weeks and it's STILL cloudy.
I should note, ADA leeches a lot of ammonia out in the first few weeks, so it's good for fishless cycles(obviously) and water changes to get it cycled are very important.
ADA is actually a little cheaper than Eco......

If that's the case, I'd go with the ADA.
