best plant substrate???

ok thank god! :)

I use Black Flourite for my substrates in a 3 and 6 Gallon and I have had no issues with cloudiness. Before I put it in the tank I put it in a bucket and ran a hose embedded in it until the water was clear. I then would stir the hose around in the flourite until it was finally clear. The whole process took about 20 minutes. Once I put it in the tank it took the filter about a half hour to clear up the water. Both of my tanks are Eclipse with the filter and the bio wheel in the hood. My plants have done well with signs of new growth and minimal melting. When I vacuum and do water changes it doesn't cloud up at all. My LFS which is considered high quality actually recommended the Flourite over ECO even though they carry both and sell the ECO for 5$ more per bag.

crazycanuck..,just another addition. I bought a 20lb bag of eco here:

I got two of those for my 20 gallon tank. There's no rinsing - packed in Liquid Amazon buffered "Black Water" solution for immediate organic water conditioning.

I simply put it in my tank, filled it up and it was virtually uncloudy the moment I started. Just telling from my personal experience, it's been great to me. Even when I replant and stir it up, it's hardly that cloudy at all.

I was told by many aquarium enthusiasts to use Schultz aquatic soil. But I havent had mine planted for long enough to know whether its good or not. Its fairly cheap, doesnt float to the top, and clears up with a little water clarifyer in about an hour, but thats all i know. Experienced thoughts?

I wouldn't recommend rinsing Eco or Fluorite. Both of these contain nutrients that, when you rinse the, you are washing out. You are washing out the things you paid so much to get.

If you want to avoid the cloudiness, use SMS or Turface, rinse it, and add ferts later.

I wondered about whether or not rinsing would eliminate nutients and I am sure it has some effect but so far my plants seem no worse for wear. I dont think Flourite would be much fun to use unless you rinse it otherwise it is too messy. I am sure that using the bucket technique I talked about above you would lose less nutients then running it through a collander or a pillow case. I also wonder about the Flourite Sand. It would seem like you would get no benefit from rinsing it. I havent seen anyone post about how cloudy it is.

aww man i was planning on using black fourite sand:wall:

Im pretty sure that the dust is the same thing as the flourite itself. Wouldnt hurt to wash it.

I have some extra bags of ADA here.
If you want some , PM.
It'll be pretty cheap(25$ per bag then whatever shipping is). 3 Bag min.
I have 15 bags at least.

UPS shipping.
