This question is near and dear to me and hopefully I can save you what I have been through (2 Other Protein Skimmers before I finally found the Aqua C Remora)
Without a doubt I would reccomend the Aqua C Remora - I have a 36 gallon and I am amazed at the amount of "junk" that this protein Skimmer takes out of my tank. It could not recommend this skimmer enough. The design is great, it is quite, has almost no bubles returned into the tank and most importanly gives me a full cup of waste nearly every two days. Just an amazing product !!!
Hopefully thsi helps with your quest - I promise you will not be disappointed if you buy it.
Ive read a lot of good things about the Aqua C. Ill do some more research, but it looks like thats the one ill be getting if nobody has any objections.
Just bought an AquaC Remora (it arrived today). I've got a Prizm, and as vjverola says, they work but they're not the best - mine took AGES to break in, it's only just starting to really work properly and I'm not happy with all the tweaking I've had to do.
I've heard mostly good things about the Remora, but there's a thread going on RC titled 'does your Remora work?' that has be a bit worried - looks like some people have no luck at all with these skimmers, while others get fantastic results. I wonder if it's something in the design/manufacturing that's responsible for some not working. The company's customer service seems second to none, I've heard nothing but good stuff there. I think you're pretty safe getting the Remora, if you want to wait a week or so I'll give you a report on how mine's working
PS - nice sig! I'm a Mitch Hedberg fan too, so sad he's gone
I have the remora pro in my 60 gallon. It's loud and returns a lot of microbubbles to the tank. The bubbles are greatly reduced by the optional skimmer box you can purchase, but with this attachment you have to be vigilant about topping off the water. The noise can also be reduced by placing a folded paper towel over the injector (I wish I could find the link to article where I discovered the paper towel trick).
I haven't had the great results that others have had (1 cup of skimmate every 2 days), but my tank is only 4 months old and I'm noticing improvements. I had a sea clone before I bought the remora, and I agree with vjverola: "It simply does not work."
After less than a week on my tank, my new Remora is kicking the Prizm's butt! It's quieter, but certainly still noisy. I guess no skimmer is silent, and I don't mind the gentle white noise from the Remora as opposed to the horrid grinding sound from the Prizm, which drove me a little nutso at times.
I'm still seeing lighter skimmate than I'd like, but it's already darker than what the Prizm produced after a month.
The microbubbles are a little frustrating, though the only thing bothered by them is me - the fish/corals seem fine. I've read that after a little while they'll clear up for the most part, but (like the Prizm) they'll never be completely gone - I don't want to install another piece of hardware in my tiny tank, so I'm willing to live with a few bubbles. I highly recommend the Remora based on what I've seen so far, it's great.
