best return pumps? and help with DIY sump design

from the math that I did (based on industry standard of 2.2 gallons of bioballs per 100 gallons of tank) 1 gallon of scrubbies will be good for 135 gallons of tank. That is in a wet/dry application though, so I would go 3 times that.

That begs the question, how many scrubbies = 1 gallon worth? Shouldnt be a problem getting more than enough into the sump. My bio filtrations needs are very low, since the plants and the surface area of the plants should habdle it all fine, but I always want more than enough bio media in the system on 'standby', incase the demand spikes for one reason or another.

Another question I have pertains to heaters. I have always heard good things about and only ever used visi therm heaters (stealth model, and delux model). But my heating requiremnts are going to be like 1,000W or more. I will probably do all I can to retain heat, lining the back of the tank with styrofoam, base of the tank, and probably sump tank too. The room its in rarely gets over 68*, at the most using a space heater might get to 70*. This is with the rest of the house at about 72. Now my favorite stealth heaters only go up to 250W, I dont feel like getting a boatload of heaters so what would be a good higher wattage choice? And those of you with larger tanks and sumps, were to you place your temp probe? In the tank or in the sump? I might be overthinking this.

Thaks for the link... I have heard bad things about one kind of titanium heater but I cant remember which, dont think it was those though. And they have a controller to... I like the idea of all heaters operating from one controller versus many different heater/sensors that could all be slightly off.

So were do you sump users put your temp sensor? In the tank? In the sump?

I just run stealth heaters in the sump, so I don't have a separate controller.
The reason I say to put the sensor in the tank is that it doesn't matter what the temperature in the sump is. The temperature you want to be regulated is in the tank.
