I am starting a new 55g salt tank, and I want to save money and have an awesome tank. I am getting live rock, and want to "seed" dead rock, however I have no idea the best kinds of live rocks, or the best dead rock to use. I only want to establish a great reef first beofre inverts, and fish.

The best live rocks are porous rather than dense. You can achieve this in rock from several different locations. Some of my favorites are Marshall Island, deepwater Tonga and premium pieces of Fiji.

i have 15 lbs of tonga, and i found that its not as porous as my other 7lbs of some unknown rock next time i go to my lfs ill ask what kind it was. Yet, tonga is a very nice looking rock.

I have Premium Fiji and Lalo LR in my tank. The Fiji is less dense, but the Lalo had the most diversity of growth and color. I bought my rock from liveaquaria.com.

so how if I get an already live rock from my LFS what is the best dead rock to use. Keeping in mind I am looking for money friendly options. and the other question is how mush rock would a 55g need.

The goal is to have about 1-2 lbs per gallon but it also depends on the type of rock and how porous it is. As far as base rock (dead rock) I think is really just up to how it looks and how much it costs. A good website for base rock is MarcoRocks:
