cichlids like to dig!!! if your not going to have live plants then it won't really matter. I just put sand in my 55 gallon w/ convicts and a midas/red devil.

They were in a 55 with medium rocks that they couldn't move but now they play in the sand and love it. I think sand is easyer to clean you just go over the top of it with. If it not to thick you wont have to stir it up....the cichlids will do that for you.

Thanks She is great and hoping on getting some fry from the eggs behind her.
Here is he mate.

sorry to hijack you thread but I would recommend sand. I love the way it looks how easy its to clean and how happy the fish look digging in it. I'll see if I can post a full tank pic when I get home tonight.

also I got Play sand from Home Depot it was unber $4 for the 50lbs bag...I only needed one for the 55. From what I hear Toys-r-us has a white play sand and you can always get black taitain(sp?) moon sand. Depends on the color you want. Just if you get it don't make it too deep so no harmful gases can't build up. But you cichlids will stir it up for you anyway.
