best treatment for fungus?

What should I look for when looking for the source of the fungus?

Look for a spot of dead, not moving water in your tank. Especially if old food has collected there. Another good spot to check is inside hollow decorations, and under decorations where old food might have collected. Any place where it might be possible for a chunk of food to sit for a week or three without being disturbed.

In my case, it was a spot under a piece of driftwood, where a few freeze dried shrimp had drifted in and gotten pinned. I had an actual patch of fungus spreading from the decaying shrimp into my substrate, forming a semi solid mass. After removing the mess and that patch of substrate, my ongoing fungus problems went away with the next waterchange.
I had one previous problem with a fake piece of decor. It was hollow, water went in, then did'nt circulate. Stagnant water eventually becomes sick water, and every time a fish poked his head into the decor, he got sick.

Or it might not be anything you can find. Don't drive yourself nuts looking for something that is'nt there. A little fungus and bacteria live in your water as free floating debris as well. That's what effects most weak or stressed fish.

Thanks for the info!

Update...I've treated in QT for 7 days with Pimafix. The fluff on the gill plate appears to be gone but there is still and blob on her dorsal fin, although it appears slightly diminished. Unfortunately my LFS doesn't sell Maroxy so I will continue with another week of Pimafix and see what happens.

Good water changes too? Clean water is important when beating a fungal infection. Glad it's off the gill plate, keep fighting the good fight!

Good water changes indeed. I normally do an approx. 40% change every sunday with a good vacuum, but I've also taken out all my ornaments and disinfected them. I did an extra 10% change on wednesday and have been using my UV Sterilizer more often. Meanwhile in the QT, the blob on the fin is almost gone now, but it looks like she has a small area on top of her head starting. I did a 50% water change on the QT and started a new round of pimafix on Sunday as well.

i recently had a similiar problem, and i picked up something called fungus eliminator, im a little hesitant to use it so im trying to wait it out. a couple websites say wait a week and just do daily water changes.

It's hard to get a good look but it appears today this white-ishness is around her mouth now. Can I use maracyn or maracyn 2 with the Pimafix??
