Best way to hold up lighting fixtures above tank?

I've seen pictures with Compact fixtures held up with little stands that are clipped on the fixture. I'm almost sure these came with the CF setup. But i just have normal canopy fixtures and 2 of them. How can i hold up these lights above the tank so i have an open surface. without hanging them. I guess i would have to make a few stands, but has everyone ever tried this.

These JBJ Lighting Fixtures include some pretty clever flip top stands that make it easy to move lights out of the way, while mounting on an open top configuration. Further down the page, they sell the mechanics for only $25 so you might be able to use these brackets with some modifications to fit any hood.
