I am wanting to upgrade my RCS tank from a 10gal to a 15gal. What would be the best way to move the little buggers over? I probably have 40+ shrimp in the 10gal. Do I really need to scoop them out one by one, or is there an easier way that I am just not seeing?

if you have a large python you could syphon them out into a bucket and then use the water from bucket to transfer,.. but easiest way is to net them after draining most of the water out to help limit the places to hide,.. and take out most of the decor/plants..

Try the old two litter bottle trap with some food in it. If they are like my shrimp you will get almost all of them in an hour

Couple of easier ways to get at least most of them.

One is to take a fair size net. Bend the handle to approximately 90 degrees. Set net on bottom of tank. Drop food on net. Wait.

When lots of shrimp on net pull it out and put shrimp in another tank.

Note that shrimp have a real fast first move so if you don't do it right you can miss a lot of them. Helps a lot if the net is big enough, at least 4x6.

The other way is to build a trap. Take a plastic bottle and cut the top off, invert it into the bottom, put feed in it, a weight if you want and set it in the tank. If you have fish that might get in it, leave the cap on and make a hole big enough for shrimp and not big enough for fish.

You'd think it would work better sitting on it's side but it works best standing up.

I wouldn't leave it for days, not much water circulation, but a few hours and then take it out and you usually have a bunch of shrimp. Especially if you didn't feed for a day or two before.

How do you get all the babies out of a tank? I haven't a clue except remove the adults, and wait for them to grow.

i have never really had luck with those methods, i just scoop and scoop until they're out, but its almost nearly impossible to get them all out. for me anyways. i now have 3 tanks with cherrys because of the fact that i never got all of them out :grinno:

you have to be very careful with this method as shrimp die quickly this way,..
i made one and it had breather holes in it and still left overnight and they were dead,.. lost many yellow shrimp this way,..and i was after pond snails anyway,..

I use the bottle method and watch it closely. I killed off a bunch of my shrimps when I left it overnight. I also will siphon them out with a small hose and I use the baited brine shrimp net as well. It takes a long time to get them all.

i just transferred mine from my 5g to a 10g. i gravel vaced as much as i could untill there was a couple inches of water and nowhere to hide. scooped out the rest
