Beta in Community Tank

Ratherbe, Do you bother with a filter or bubbler with your 10 gal? Or just the heater? With my current arrangement (really, just a very large vase), I just do a 100% water change once/week.

A 100% water change is unneccessary and stressful. You should treat it just like you would if you had other types of fish in there. Yes, a filter can be helpful at keeping the water conditions more clean and stable. Filters assist in circulating water and by doing such, improve oxygenation, prevent stagnation, and help to prevent varying degrees of temperature. Bettas are tropical fish and should have a heater if you live in an area where the water temperature might drop below 72 degrees. Optimal temperatures for a betta would be 78 to 80 degrees.

Carlzmom - I do have a filter for the reasons that Sammie gave. If there wasn't a filter the water would get stagnant - yuck. I did have a bubbler in there, but he didn't seem to care for it much (and I learned on AC that betta's don't care much for water movement), so I took it out. He doesn't seem to mind the current from the filter though, as he actually seems to enjoy getting in the flow of the water. :) I do 30% water changes once a week. He gets a varied diet of frozen or dried blood worms, and Hikari's Betta Bio-Gold. He also enjoys resting in his java moss - it's like his little bed. :girl:

Adding him with Angels is a recipe for disaster.

Not necessarily, I know a lot of people who have kept angels and bettas. I used to have angels and a betta together for years. It all depends of the personality of the betta. In my experience, both with my own fish and seeing other people's fish, bettas and angels always have done great together. But there is an exception to every rule, so still be ready to separate them for the first few days.

i have never put a betta in with angels, but have put it in with an RTBS, mollies, rainbows, neons.

they always chase the rainbows for some reason, but never chase anything else.

and i would think they would enjoy the company and the flow of water from the filter. mine never seems stressed.
