Betta Advice Please!

i would personally do 2 bettas , divided with no cories.just to save the poor bettas from those tiny cups....

I'm very torn between getting the 2 bettas and dividing the tank or getting 1 betta and cories.

I'm just concerned that the floor of the tank will become littered with food very quickly. I have never had a betta. Are they messy eaters?

I just don't know how I'm going to decide on only 1 betta.

Opinions on 10 gallon tank:
- 1 betta and cories
- divided tank with 2 bettas

Thanks!

CatLover,

Consider trading the power filter for a sponge filter or two. They generate bubbles that float to the surface, but no real current. Easier on the betta because some of those filters for 10g tanks produce a pretty darn strong current.

I've put sponge filters in my 10g gertrudae tanks -- smaller ones at each corner -- and it's been working about well. I also use sponges in my 2.5g betta tanks.

As for eating -- bettas aren't messy eaters at all. People just overfeed because they are so good at begging.

And boy, do they beg. Mine will also show off when I come up to the tank. He's an absolute joy to watch.

Since you all ready ordered it. try it and see... which one did you get? got a link?

Thank you all for the responses!

I may just cancel the order on the divider . . . I'm going to be backordering more nitrate test fluids anyway.
The divider was like $7, so maybe I'll get a couple sponge filters instead.

If I got the 1 betta, do you think I could have maybe 2 or 3 cories?

Would the betta try to attack the cories? If I do a betta and cories in the 10 gallon, who to add first? betta or cories? If the betta messed with them, I could always move the catfish to my other tank.

The tank is about to be empty because my incredibly reproductive guppies are going to a store in my area that I've been really pleased with their fish and cleanliness lately. I think the store will be able to sell them so they can rapidly reproduce as somebody else's problem! Never again will I buy guppies!

Anyway I'm really excited, I just want to make sure everything is planned out before I bring the betta home. Thanks!

Here is my final decision:

I canceled the divider and replaced it with a sponge filter that was on sale. Supposedly its a really good one.

I am assuming that it is powered by airstones? I have a couple of hagen maxima pumps that are not in use- they are virtually new.

I am planning on just getting another 10 gallon tank for 1 betta and perhaps a couple cories.

I don't intend to grow live plants, so what is a betta's lighting preference? I thought about maybe a glass hood so that I could also see him from above. I am trying to do this tank pretty simple and inexpensive- will only house 1 betta.

Thanks for the help and if anyone has any more tips . . .

Too bad about the live plants, the fish like them. Most bettas like to rest in plants... you could try something really low light like a java fern (I had one in my betta bowl and moved it to the tank when I moved him but it lived fine without an overhead light). Also, you want to make sure you have plenty of hidey holes and such for the cories (3 would be fine).
