I have a friend with a betta in a little bowl who doesn't want it anymore (probably a common problem). Anyway, I would like to give it a nice home with friends. I think zebra danios are pretty and according to my research they are compatible with bettas. I'd like to get a school of about 8-10. So with the 1 betta what size tank would I need? Is this a good combination? Do these fish eat the same things or would I have to figure out how to feed them separately? Or, should I just keep the betta by itself in a bigger tank?

I'm open to suggestions because all I definitely have so far is the betta. Thanks!

Well, if you want to have at least 8-10 zebras along with the betta, I would suggest at least a 15 gallon aquarium, 20 or higher would be greatly appreciated by the danios. If you get 20 gal. or more, you could also add a group of cory cats, which will be very interesting.

Danios don't necessarily HAVE to have a group of 8-10 though it would be better that way. If you don't want to spend too much money, then keep 5 or 6 danios with the betta 10 gallon.

Good luck with your aquarium.

They all would probably eat the same foods.

Just make sure that at feeding time, the betta get's at least his fair share of food, because zebra danios are very fast and active fish, especially at feeding time!, and bettas are slow swimmers, even when they are eating, they are slow feeding fish, so just be sure to keep an eye out for that. :)

Bettas prefer warmer water, but that should not a problem, as Zebra Danios are very hardy in terms of water quality :D.

Also, with bettas, the temperament of a betta can vary upon the individual fish, so make sure that it isn't attacking the zebra's (as if the betta can catch them though LOL!)

Hope this helps at least a little! :)

thanks for the help. I got a 20 gallon tank so hopefully the zebra danios will have enough room. I set up the new tank using some gravel and filter pad from my old tank. The betta seems happier with more elbow room. So far, the water tests ok, but it's only been a day. I think I'll wait a couple of days before I get any danios, just to make sure everything seems all right.

Keep an eye on things to make sure the betta isn't stressed too much by the danios. They are a wild and crazy fish and the betta may not appreciate their antics much. Make sure the betta has some hiding places behind plants and rocks so he can get some peace and quiet when he needs to :)
