Betta attacking Cory cats

Hi everyone, I'm new here so if you need any more info let me know.

I've had my betta for over a year in a different tank. After consulting my lfs they said it would be fine to get a 10g and put three cory cats in there with the betta. And it was... For about 4 months. He would follow them around, not in an aggressive way but kind of checking them out. He would even get spooked when they would come up behind him and swim to the top. I recently noticed he would go after the corys when they were anywhere near him. One got sick two weeks ago and passed away. I'm not sure what caused that but now the other corys stay to the bottom hiding underneath the heater and only one out when they are eating. The only time he's not bothering them when they decide to come out of hiding is when I'm standing infromt of the tank because he thinks he's getting fed. I'm not sure if adding more plants and decoration will help. Because of space I can not have two tanks. I am not sure what to do but I do not want the Cory cats to be stressed all the time because of him.

Male bettas can be jerks. They're all different. Corys are only comfortable in larger groups. I wouldn't keep any less than 6. The corys will be happier and the betta may just give up on them.

You say cory died? Are you doing weekly water changes on this tank?

Yes I am doing weekly water changes. Always have. And I don't have enough space for a bigger tank than what I have now (10gallon) and I think 6 corys are too much for that size. I'm thinking about giving my betta away to a lfs if they will take him. I'm not sure.
