my new betta (had since sunday) is making a bubble nest, at least i think. its almost 1 inch thick, but small, maybe 1 inch around. if so, should i get him a female? i have a divider for my 2.5 gal hes in. the filter wont interfere since its on the other side. and thats the side i put the male in right?

From what I've heard it's a lot of money, time, and RESPONSIBILITY!!!
I think they can have over 50 fry, all which will have to be separated and getting water changes. Too much work for me right now! hehe :joke:
Just my 2 cents!

they can have over 200 or so fry, all the boys will have to be separated, kept in individual tanks/cups, youll have to feed several times a day, clean out every cup daily...
if you want to breed some fish i would suggest you go for guppies.

Mr A....I wouldn't if I were you...lol....I did that only once and havn't had the courage to try that again ! I got over 200 fry my first attempt and almost ALL of them survived ! I really enjoyed the whole process, but it took about six months of my life to care for them until I found them all homes.

Besides, the whole spawning process for bettas is a bit involved and dangerous for the fish. If you don't do it right they could end up tearing each other apart to the point where you could loose one. If you still want to give this a shot, you need to do some serious research before you attempt it.. :read: They would definitely need something bigger than 2 1/2 gallons for sure.

It sounds like your betta's happy since he's building a bubblenest. He doesn't need to breed, and as people have said, breeding bettas is a huge responsibility. Don't forget that once the male babies are a certain size, they will each need their own separate home so that they don't fight! Finding permanent homes for hundreds of babies is probably also hard, especially if you are breeding petstore bettas. I wouldn't do it myself.

ok, guess not. but it would be cool to have that many. even if i did, id have to keep em in bathroom mini cups til they're 1 cm long. :dive: that's be cool.

Yes, it's definitely cool, I love doing it. But the work it takes to actually keep them alive and healthy is insane.
Do your research about the time, money and work it takes, if you decide to do it, I wish you all the best :)

Ditto EMS....I did have fun the one time I tried it...and I do have a hankerin to try again sometime...but I'd rather have a proper barracks system than to be cleaning out 200 individual cups every other day. It wasn't hard to do, just used airline tubing to syphon more than half out of each cup, then refilled using a pitcher. All the cups were on a plastic shelving unit I had bought just for that purpose.

If I did try again, I would definitly be more aggressive with the culling...

Here's a pic of one of my fry, I still have this one, he's quite something. I've never seen ventral fins as wide as his..
