My Girlfriend has decided that she would like to use Bettas as centerpieces for our wedding. She thinks they would be beautiful decoration, promised large bowls as compared to the small tanks they are kept in at the fish store and people can take them home as party favors. Those not adopted by guests will be returned to the store.

I said it was a bad and cruel idea, on many levels, for many reasons. She doesn’t believe me, and thought I should ask my fish buddies on the fish forum what they think…… Well what do you think…… :shark:

Woops ment to put this in general or newby...

She has had the idea, I think, because I love fish tanks so much.
what she’s not getting is that though I like fish…my real love is planted aquariums. So I suggested bowls of duck weed…. Easier and no fish have to get hurt.

Well, if you love fish, certainly you don't want fish to be abused on your special day. I'm certain your girlfriend will understand. Let her know it bothers you to see bettas improperly housed. Now is the time to speak up. Let her know that bettas need filters, heaters, and everything else tropical fish need to thrive. Bowls without these items are not appropriate homes and it's one of the worst fishkeeping myths out there. If she is willing to provide bowls with heaters and filters to guests, fine, but she's looking at at least $40-$50 per centerpiece.

Something that might be fun for you and her both, would be Marimo Moss Ball centerpieces - it's a living ball of algae that will stay in the ball shape and grow with no issues in a decorative bowl or jar. They have an interesting legend behind them as well that could be printed as a tag for each centerpiece - your guests will be fighting over them! They are supposedly symbolic of true love. http://english.marimo.com.hk/marimari.swf

I absolutely love the Marimo ball Idea, I hope Kandy will too. Thanks Webcricket
This is exactly what I was trying to tell her. She even told me ….. “Bettas will be fine, they live in puddles in Japan… She must have heard or read that on one of our many pet store excursions

i'll copy and paste the same reply from petshub.

do not put a betta in a little bowl. they need at least 5 gallons, 10 is better, and they need a heater and a filter and a cycled tank just like any other tropical fish.

its true that during the dry season in their native habitat they must survive in tiny puddles of stagnant water, but this is a very stressful time for them and many die, and it is only for a few months. as soon as the rain comes again they have several hundreds of thousands of gallons of water fed by irrigation streams.

why would you want to replicate a bettas habitat during the worst part of the year when many die in a tiny stagnant bowl?

not to mention that the bettas we buy in the store are many hundreds of generations out of the wild and have little in common with their wild cousins.

please provide your betta with a 5-10g tank with a heater and filter.

i'll also add that i agree with rosemary. why put a beautiful fish in such a tiny container he can't even move? i have seen bettas in 10g tanks with full run of the tank and they are so gorgeous. they are active and swim around like crazy, flairing their fins and desplaying beautifully. whereas bettas in those tiny bowls just sit at the bottom or on a leaf and don't do much of anything. its quite sad.

when you make the commitment to bring an animal into your home, you make the commitment to provide that animal with everything it needs to THRIVE, not just survive.

a 10g tank is cheaper than a 5, about $10. a filter for a 10g tank is about $11. some gravel and plants and a little heater is about another $20. so $40 and you have a lovely little tank and a perfect habitat for a betta and even some tank mates.

those look good, but I think the mossball idea is more weddingy (hey, I just made a new word! :D)

Glad you like the idea, I think they're pretty cool! Simple, modern, elegant, and total customizable with gravel color, ribbons, addition of flowers, bottle shape, etc.

I have to ask, have you been watching Pee-Wee's Playhouse re-runs on Adult Swim? He makes words up like that all the time.
