Betta compatibility?

I think full size gouramis would be a bit large for that tank. Also its generally not a good plan to keep more than one male gourami in a tank. As they are related to bettas( have a labyrinth organ) and will fight much the same as bettas when you put two or more male gouramis together.

Yeah, if I were going to do the gouramis of any variety it would definitely either be a lone male or a male with two females. (I'm lucky enough that my LFS usually carries both genders.) I just wasn't sure if the pearls would be too big for the tank. *sigh* looks like my two top choices aren't very good options... Time to do some more looking

I'd go with the betta. I have always kept a betta in my community tank, wouldn't be the same without one. Just have some planted area so there is some refuge if needed. And some water sprite.

You'll find the activity level of a betta will increase proportional to the size of the tank. Mine does not seem to be bothered by active tankmates.
