Hello Everyone...was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for fish to put in with a betta (probably a male) that would be compatible in a 5 gal...possibly neon or glowlight tetra...any ideas would be most helpful...thanks!!!

That really depends on the attitude/personality of your betta. I would first put him in by himself and watch to see how much he flares at his own reflection in the glass. If he seems extremely aggressive towards it I might consider leaving him on his own. However if he doesn't seem to be affected by it you could put him with a few different fish. Neons may be a bit sensitive to put in with him by themselves in a small space. We once had a 2 Gal with a gorgeous pink Betta and his companion was a frog (African Dwarf) . They lived happily and finally we moved the frog out so he would have more room to explore in the 55Gal. So like I was saying, it all depends on the Betta. As I have said already, Blackskirt Tetras get along well with Bettas (in my personal experiences), Goldskirts also do the same, and I would recommend getting 3 of them so they can school. I'm sure lots of other tetras would work also, but this is with my personal experience!

I put two dwarf cories in w/my betta after he was there about 3 weeks against others opinions. They took a little time to get used to each other and now they sleep/rest next to each other. Like Ems said it depends on the personality of your betta. The cories are good because they have kept the bottom clean.

in my humble opinion (IMHO)

Just try not to get fish that are: shaped the same, colored the same, long finned like the Beta, and try to get fish that are faster than the beta.

re: Betta

I had a male Betta in a 1 gal. tank with 3 White Clouds, Panda Cory cat, and a ghost shrimp. They all lived happy for over a year (but I had to gravel vac about every 3 days  Now my Betta fish is in a 10 gal. with the same crew plus a Dwarf Gouramis and a Rams Horn snail;) But then again my Betta is very mellow :D

The probelm with adding more fish to a 5 gallon tank is that unless you are willing to do lots of upkeep, the tank can get dirty too fast. Cory catfish, tetras all will fit int here and probably get along with the betta after awhile, but the water params can crash really fast in taht type of setup. Also unless you get enough of as certain type of tetras (say 5 or more) they can get either too scared of the betta or else aggressive towards it. A 10 gallon tank would be a lot better if you could get one.
