Betta cycling

Hi GilnFin. I've kept bettas before - I'm not an expert on them but I'd say the fins in the pic look fine. Melafix is good for frayed fins and won't damage your bacteria.

I just have one suggestion for your cycle. What can speed it up is to add loads of plants. Just add the cheapest plants and float them - the more the better.

Good luck and enjoy.

yeah sure just gimmie just a minute

nitrate is about 30 nitrite is about 0-0.5
ammonia is 0
ph is about 6.5
kh is hovering around 0-40
and gh is high like 180

we have hard water and don't really know how to fix it... we went to the pet store and they weren't really sure they thought aquarium salt would do the trick but we don't know how that will affect our fish.

Sounds like your tank has just about cycled. You can add some peat to your substrate or your filter to soften the water but unless you are planning to get really heavy into plants its probably not worth trying to play with. Your fish and plants will get use to it. On the bright side, you could probably keep really nice looking snails! :)

We ordered more plants in the mail..
They should be arriving shortly...
hopefully the new light will help...
I have read that flourescent is better than halogen..
I will also try the fertilizer..
Thank you for all the advice..
I'll keep my fingers crossed and continue with the water changes...

Last question?
what brand of fertilizer would you recommend?
tablet or liquid?
after the tank gets cycled how often should I do the water changes then? and what percentage?
Thank you :o)

how do I know when its fully cycled?
Fin's tank look clearer now.. Gil's not so much...
thank you..

our nitrate is still around 30 and everything else seems pretty fine.
We bought some water conditioning fizz by jungle for the plants, I dont know if that is any good.

Nitrates arent that bad, but lower would be better. And I'm fan of the Seachem line of plant nutrients, I've had really good succes with them, dont hear of anyone using jungle, but that doesnt mean they might not work for you.
