I've noticed recently that my betta seems to have a lump of some sort in his neck area, where the two long vertical fins in the front attach. I don't know if he's been that way all along and I just didn't notice, or what. Is this normal? It's about the size of a single peanut.

full tummy was my thought as well he's either fat or constipated peas are the solution and feeding teeny tiny meals 2-3 times a day

if you have some kind of betta pellet- 2 or 3 of these ting specs of food are plenty for one feeding- if your betta is on the smaller side only 2

It's really hard for me to know how much he actually eats, since he's in a community tank with Mollies. I try to feed the mollies their flakes first (sometimes betta eats a few of those), I even try to distract the mollies with the pellets for my cory cats, but no go. As soon as I put in the freeze dried bloodworms, they all swarm, and I only ever really see Mr. Blue Betta get maybe two bites.

We all go through that routine usually twice a day. A little more if there's fry, and if there's not, sometimes I'll only feed once a day.

What exactly is a "blanched pea?" lol I think I have some frozen peas in my freezer, would those work? How many and how often? And in place of regular food?

And no, other than the big belly/neck, he seems fine. Behaving now just as he did since, well, about day 3, after he got used to his tank mates. I've had him in there for about 3-4 months.

Blanching means to soften, in this case peas, by putting it in boiling water for a couple minutes. You can just microwave the peas in some water for a couple minutes until they are soft. Then you can just take them out of thier husks and feed them to the betta! This can be done with lots of other veggies too.

Can you post a picture? I have my betta in a QT tank with a little epson salt because he looks like he swallowed a marble. He's been in there two weeks now. I'm feeding him medicated pellets in case its dropsy from a bacterial infection. He looks a little better than when I first put him. I thought if it was dropsy he would be swollen and bloated all over. With Junior, its just his tummy. He acts completely normal and begs for food as usual. I wonder if we both just have a couple of piggies that need to go on a diet? :idea2:

yours definately sounds constipated- stop feeding for a few days and feed only peas in small quatities until he breaks down and eats some (bettas are carnivors so it will take some persistence on your part most likely) after a day or 2 or 3 he should shrink up a bit

Will the others try to eat the peas? And if so, is this ok? I have a little floaty plastic breeding box thingy for the mollies, should I put him in there to be sure he's eating JUST the peas?

I took a few pics, gimme a little while to try and figure out which show it the best, and then how to post it. :oP~

yeah just feed every body peas until you see your betta;s belly go down - it will be good for all of them. a little veggie matter is good for most aquarium fish

for a fun treat sometimes drop in a couple little bits of banana- they'll go nuts for it

I'm sure you meant to say that they'll go bananas for it. :duh:
