Betta Diseased?

Well... can't figure out how to get the pics on here small enough that it'll allow me to, but so that you can still see it. *sigh*

My betta as has this lump it has had it since i got it and it is still alive 5 months on
so i dont think is it that serious

OK... After a bunch of trial and error ( :pc: ), I finally figured this out, and here's a few pics of my betta. The pics aren't terribly clear, but hopefully you can see what I'm talking about as far as the lump goes.

OK, I appreciate all of the help and advice, but... I'm torn on what to do. Some say to feed peas, some say to feed nothing; some say to isolate/quarantine, some say not to. Obviously if I feed him nothing, he has to be separated, as I still have other mouths to feed. *sigh* Sure is a tough life being a fishy momma.

Well, the reason for seperating him out would be to be sure that he doesn't get anything to eat. As far as the pea thing goes...that is certainly a good idea AFTER you have fasted him.

If you put him back in the community you'll most likely end up with the same issue again. Bettas are incredible hogs ! Unless you can add something to your tank that is faster than he is and gobbles up the food fast than the betta. Guppies or danios come to mind right off the bat......though I have a serious dislike for danios...super hyperactive little creatins.......come to think of it, they may just pester your betta right to death so they may not be a good idea.

OR...you could just leave him in there as he is and see how he does ?

Heh, you're right, Emg, that certainly is a well-fed betta :)

I agree with Emg, he needs a serious fasting period. Why don't you get a net breeder, like this:

http://www.bigalsonline.com/catalog/product.xml?product_id=31683;category_id=2321

It hangs onto the side of your tank. Put your betta in there and he'll still be with the gang, but he won't be able to get at all the food. He'll probably get a little bit, but not near as much as he was.

Leave him in there for a few days until the lump goes down a lot, then feed him some skinned, cooked peas. I keep a bag of frozen in my freezer and once a week I take a small amount out and nuke them in the microwave with some water for about 45 seconds. Let them cool. Then *pop* the pea part out of the shell, squish 'em real good and put them in your tank. Feed a couple of peas to the whole gang -- I usually do 1 pea for 4-5 fish, depending on fish size -- and just give your betta a very *small* amount. Watch and make sure he eats it.

The peas will help him pass waste faster and easier. Once he gets down to his regular size, you can release him back into the tank.

But, you need to take a look at how you are feeding your fish. Bettas *are* pigs, like Emg says, but they are also slow. If you don't have a lot of top feeders and are feeding flakes, take the flakes and let them go *under* the water and into the filter outflow. The fish should have no problems chasing down the food and the betta will have to work hard to keep up. Great exercise and this should help with him hogging the food.

Also, it's possible that you are feeding too much. Cut back quite a bit. IMO once a day is fine if you are feeding twice or more.

Hope this helps,

Roan

I have a "Lee's 2-way breeder" that's clear plastic. It's not that big, maybe about twice the size of those little cups they keep betta in at the store.

Would it be better to leave him in the breeder constantly, until he's back to his manly form; Or should I just put him in there at feeding times, and let him back out after all the other fish have eaten and the food's gone? Which would be less stressful for him.

I don't want him to worry that he's losing his "territory" to all those other fish swimming right in front of him, but that he can only watch. I don't know. lol I'm about to put him in though, cuz I need to feed the others. Just wondering what to do after feeding.
