Hey all,

My poor betta is in bad shape. He's in a fully cycled 5 gallon tank, UGF and mechanical filter w/carbon. Water temp is 78 degrees with the heater.

Came home from work one night, and gave him his pinch of pellets, he looked fine. His fins weren't 'flowing' like they normally were, but I didn't think anything of it. Went in there to check him (maybe 4 hours later), and his long fins had rotted off!

The edges of the fins were discolored, so I added a tbs of salt and turned the heater up to about 82 degrees. The next morning, the discoloration of his fins is gone, but they've rotted off almost all the way to his body. He seems to swim okay, but overall, looks pretty ugly.

I have a really small pleco in the tank with him to take care of the algea, and he's in great shape, so i'm not sure what to think.

Any ideas what happened? It's very odd.

I believe its finrot. You can find medicine for it at the fish store, use it as directed as soon as possible. Bettas can recover from it, but the sooner you start, the better his chances.
