First thing, I hope this is the right board. I'm thinking it is but please correct me if its not.
Second, I just started breeding betta fish (splendens?) and I think I have gotten everything right up to this point. However, I don't have a dark bodied female so there obviously won't be vertical bars, so how do you tell when they are ready to be put with the male? I have had th female in a sort of chimeny for a while, so I posted some pics. Please tell me what you think, and maybe how soon I should put them together. Thanks!
Oh, and third, the tank is actually much bigger in realy life :)

Alright now this is what my question is on. This is my female, Kit. She is definately getting rounder, but based on the pictures, what do you think? Is she ready to leave the chimney to finish teh spawning process with the male, or should I keep her in there longer?

Well, float the bettas in cups side by side in the tank. If the male is flaring at her, then it's good so far. If she is SWIMMING WITH HER HEAD DOWN, she wants to mate. I don't know why, but that's how it happens. You can introduce the pair after that IF the water is 80 degrees to 82 degrees F and if the male and female are showing interest in each other (flaring for the male, swimming with head down for female) and don't introduce them yet if the female is flaring or the male is showing no interest. Introduce them but keep a very close eye on them today.

you cant breed them in that tank.the eggs WILL fall into the gravel and rot...and I dont even see a filter :confused:
 
There is a filter, but why will the eggs fall? I read that they when they put the eggs in the nest, the male buts more bubbles around them so they won't fall? Is this information correct? Or I will switch tanks if not.
 
they 'embrace'(he squeezes the eggs out of her) and the eggs fall,alot of them go to the bottom and he picks them up...but with gravel he will not be able to get them.
what kind of filter do you have??
 
I use a seperate breeding specific tank of 10G with a sponge filter, heater, and a big bunch of fake plants.

Fill the 10G to halfway, stick the sponge filter, heater, and all the plants in a jumble in one corner/side of the tank. Stick whatever you want the male to nest to on the other side of the tank. Leave the tank bottom completely bare.

If you don't have vertical barring to watch for, then you want to watch for clamped fins and swimming with her head down.
 
Okay I'll try that. The female has been swimming like that fora while so I guess I know she's ready. Meanwhile to get the rocks out and the plants in...
 
Or you could try sand like I am. That's if you want a more asthetic touch. Bit more work though.
