Betta genetics... what the heck!

ILOVEBETTAS

It's Cory Lover's cat!
My betta has weird mixed genetics. They labeled him at the petstore as just a regular betta, but it appears he has some Crowntail genetics in him. His tail is slightly spiky, not as spiky as a Crowntail's, but he isn't a regular betta. Do you peeps think he should've been sold for more, since he has Crownatail genes? And peeps, do you think he's a cull from a Crowntail breeder? Do you think he's mixed breed? What do you peeps think?

the only time a betta with CT genes should be sold for more is if they can be identified visibly as a CT, meeting all the qualifications. most likely he is. the breeder prob. didnt' see whatever it was he wanted in the betta and gave him to a petstore so somoene could hopefully take him home. it's possible he could be a VT+CT mix i believe

It's quite possible that he is the mix that mtiller mentioned.
I know that when you have a halfmoon x crowntail they are sometimes referred as Halfsuns because they have the HM spread, but also the very slight but even crowntail "spikes" I've attached a pic of one of Nicebettas(Vinita) fish in Thailand for you to see.

Now not all of the fry will turn out this way...you could end up with ful CT's and full HM's and a mix of anything else if the parents are carrying other hidden genes
