Betta Horror

I've seen a bowl that is cut in half so you can hang it on the wall! I was amazed at the things people think of to abuse fish! I have , I admit, put a mirror in front of the betta and it responded how I wanted it to. It was new from the store. I did it a couple of times but that was it. That was 2 years ago. Also the state that most bettas are in when they are at the stores are horrible. It makes me sad.

black and white

I think people are seeing things too black and white. Obviously you should not allow your betta to flare constantly. However, showing your betta a mirror every so often is NOT abuse. Do you think that a male betta NEVER sees another male betta in it's lifetime? Go to bettatalk.com and read more about flaring (it's not always a life and death type of thing.)

Everytime I go to walmart all the betta's are in those horrible little cups with that disgusting blue water and they are all lying on the bottom of the cups. Not to mention all the other fish they have in the tanks. That store should not be allowed to sell live organisms!!

I have never seen one "flare itself to death"...
Well apparently people have done it where the fish attacks the mirror until it kills itself. Or other people will put another betta in the tank .

Yah, I'd like to see that too. I put mirrors on all my betta tanks. They flare at it constantly for about 15 minutes and get bored when nothing happens. After that, they use the mirror a few times a day for a short period of time, just to make sure that the other betta is still there :)

Would I leave a mirror on the tank if I thought they were going to hurt themselves? Of course not. I wouldn't dare hurt my fish.

Seriously, IMO that is just absolute bunk. I've been to that Betta Talk site and IMO all they want is your money to buy their junk betta products. They overcharge for stuff you can buy anywhere. The only difference is that their stuff is "specifically for bettas" and has "betta" packaging

SOME of their advice is good, some of it is VERY questionable at best.

I'd rather as TMQP here for advice than anyone on that site.

/rant on

I love keeping fish. I hate to see fish mistreated as much as the next guy. But, I am going to say something that has been eating at me. Flame on. Fish are fish. Money is money. Stores like Wal-Mart want money. People want bettas because they are "Fighting Fish". People want to be entertained by the fish they buy. They also want the tank to be appealing to look at. So people are going to buy the "betta vases" and "betta bowls". No amount of griping about it is going to make them stop selling/buying. Wal-mart cares about one thing. Money. People, in general, care about the common betta about as much as they do a lizard that wanders into thier home in the summertime. Half of the general populace will pick the lizard up by the tail, (which any reptile person knows not to ever do) and the other half will stomp on it, rather then try to pick it up at all. Do I go gripe about it on a reptile board, where people KNOW not to pick a lizard up by his tail? No. What difference would it make? The people picking the lizards up like that are not going to visit that forum, because they dont give a ****e. Does anyone else see my point? If not, so be it, but I tire of reading posts about people complaining about fish conditions at LFS #9001. Yes, they are terrible, no they are not going to be better after you gripe here and write your letter. So dont bother. Just do not patronize that store/section, and go on about your business. Griping about the conditions in 1 of the 5000+ Wally Worlds in the USA, in which they turn huge profits selling 4 cent bettas for $5.99, + 43 cent tanks for $9.99, isnt going to make one of the largest retailers in the world stop selling them. Or fix the conditions. Or train the employees properly. Period. So just stop eating bandwith posting about it. Please.

/end rant

That being said, i want to appoligize to the OP briefly. This rant is not targeted at you specifically, just to people in general. And, for the record, you want to see animal cruelty, you should check out the living conditions of a chicken/egg farm sometime. I did, and it quite literally turned my stomach. Is it going to change? Sadly, never.

I have two bettas. I had to move their tanks more than three feet apart WITH things blocking their view. Less than three feet, even with vision obstruction (a towel hanging between them but not touching their tanks) and they flared knowing the other was there. I was amazed that they could sense each other but I suppose since fish can sense (to a certain degree) the 'em' radiation of other fish (not exactly em radiation, but something similar produced by living organisms), that might be why.

I can't stand betta abuse. My one betta, Bob the blue betta, (the other is new...I felt horrible when I saw poor Marvin in the little cup of ich treated water, I just couldn't leave him...I wish I could save them all...) is more than three years old and looking much healthier than any other fish I've ever had! I hate it how people think bettas are disposable. They are beautiful fish and should be treated with RESPECT!!! Argh....

:dive2: i have 4 bettas 2 in each of my ten gallon tanks i have the dividers that divides the tanks into 5 gallons each the bettas can see each other and they are fine with it yes they do flare but only for a few then they go abour their business my bettas look amazing they are the best i have even gotten them so divided tanks work as long as they have room to swim around and its not those stupid divided plastic things that give them like 4 inches to move!!!! I agree to whomever said that walmart shouldnt sell fish i used to wrok there and what they did was horrible they never took care of the fish at all i always tried to but no one ever tried after me walmart sucks with fish!!!
