Betta in community

Dave- I am a total water nazi...Poops plucked out every day with a turkey baster, water change 50 percent ever other day...I agree that temp and water quality are probably the two biggest factors in any fishes health. You take care of the water and the fish will take care of themselves...

You know, I can agree with you about taking care of your water Pixie, but frequent 50% water changes seem like way over kill to me. If you have 100 bettas in 1 gal jars (most spawns would be bigger than that) and change 50% of their water every other day day that adds up to about 25 gals of water a day which is 175 gal of water a week. Which is ... a colosal waste of a precious resource. Epecially when the fish do not need it.

Changing good water for good water is pointless. A betta can live very happily in a 1 gal jar with a weekly water change ... which is the standard by which most IBC breeders operatate. It's substantial when you start running the numbers over a years time. The difference between 100 gal and 175 gal of water based on a 52 week year = 3,900 gal of wasted water. Imagine if we all did this.

Now I admit I try to do some environmental conscious things in my life, but I am by no stretch of the imagination a fanatic environmentalist, but this bothers me. Especially when the bottom line is that it's not nessesary. You might as well flush your toilet 25 times a day even though you don't need to. And aren't you the one who constantly points out that no fish should be flushed for environmental reasons? I see your environmental sensitivities only apply when it comes to what others are doing.

Don't talk it, live it.

Yes, i am aware of how much water I go through...Babies are raised in a 45 gal until Jarring...They are jarred for maybe a month or so until sold.

You are assuiming I keep one gallon jars...They are in 1Qt Masons, thus the more frequent changes.

You also assume I "waste" the water...I toss it on my lawns and gardens. Want to get ugly about water consumption? Start with all the people that water their lawns incessantly...Not to mention golf courses.

Actually, no i am not...Not sure who you are referring to. Tossing a fish down the toilet would not be a big problem since it goes through a series of grinders and such not to mention chemical treatment long before it hits the water supply...Nothing would survive it.

Matter of fact, i do...Thanks for the imput though :)

Fine ... then make sure you clarify this otherwise it sounds like you're simply encouraging people to do unessesary 50% water changes. Hell, I was thinking borderline OCD until you cleared this up. :)

Heres a thought, next time before you jump down someones throat, YOU clarify the points.
At no time did I advise 50 percent water changes every other day in a tank environment. You ASSumed that. You know what they say- never ASSume anthing...
I guess to keep quality Bettas, you have to be boarderline OCD...You will never see a thread from me about popeye, velvet, rot whatever....Can I put you down for a nice breeding pair? :)

I love how you guys manage to turn one person's innocent question into your own soapbox! We ALL have our personal habits, no-no's, and must's for tanks. I think the bottom line of this thread has been try it...and if it doesn't work...take him out. It's not rocket science.

Whoa! Peace!

I'm not jumping on one post. I've seen you comment on 50% water changes in associaton with community tanks also. Which I also think is excessive, but I don't want to argue with you. Really.

A nice breeding pair? Hrm ... not yet. I don't have the space for that many jars yet. However if you ever have some non-breeders that need a good home, I'll pay shipping. I'll even house genetic defects ;)

Yes, once a week.
