betta life expectancy

I do have a small grav vac, I just cant get under the filter with it, and I don't think it is strong enough to pull up much from the bottom. But now that I know how to safely remove him I can do a good cleaning without him in there. I do a regular water change from 25% to 50% but if I have to dismantle the tank to get under the filter I suppose I will be doing a 100% change, shouldn't I add back some of that old water w/o the gunk from under the gravel so I don't shock his little system?:hypnotized:

i had 1 live for 4 years in small bowl of water with a ceramic whale, plastic plant, and blue gravel. water was dumped out every week, gravel washed in soapy water and plants and whale scrubbed with cloth with soap. all bacteria were annihilated every week. fish got weird if i missed the weekly "water change" session. he loved his bloodworms and whale. good fish.
