ok, i have had this betta for about a month or so and he has been fine. i had him in one of the dual betta keepers with another male. recently bought a 2.5G with a divider and put them both in there over the weekend. since then my one has been losing his fins. he seems to be swimming ok, but his fins are just falling out. what is causing this and will he be alright?

i havent tested the water, figured if it was something to do with the water it would be affecting the other betta in the tank as well, but he seems perfectly fine.

i rember reading somewhere that bettas seem to bite on their own fins when they are stressed...

Every fish is different. Just because your co-worker gets the flu and you worked 8 hours in the same office do you necessarily end up sick ?
Not always...

One betta could have a weaker immune system to begin with or got more stressed from the move. Stress = weaked immune system in a fish.

Make sure your water parameters are perfect - no ammonia or nitrite. If any is detectable do 50% waterchanges x or 2x a day.
Usually if given clean water the fish is able to heal himself. Maybe add a little melafix.

If its too persistant i'd try some Marcyn/ MaracynII.

It's good that you've moved them to a larger tank.

As others have said, you can't assume that the water quality is okay just because one of the fish doesn't look like he's having problems yet. Since it's a new tank most likely ammonia is high; please please please test the water and do partial water changes (daily if necessary) to get the ammonia (and later, nitrite) levels down to 0.

If you can, while the tank is cycling switch to a water conditioner like Amquel+ or Prime which will change at least some of the ammonia to a less harmful form without interfering with the establishment of nitrifying bacteria. This is no substitute for testing the water and doing partial water changes as necessary but it can reduce the stress on your fish.
