Betta Mateing Question...

the cameras not with me =[...

But il try to describe every thing that happens.

Ok i pulled the splitter apart, the male sees the female and flares up and the female just runs for cover...Is this normal? I thought the female was the one that rejects the male tho.

first of all what is the temp and do you have plants in there for her to hide and for the fry to hang out when they hatch. sometimes you might not be successful if it is your first time. if you have a light leave it on for them but monitor them since it can take between 6 to 24 hrs for them to mate. temp is also important since they are tropical fish warm water. the female will get beat up quite a bit rip fins scales missing but to a certain degree where it is not killing her. also if you are successful the male should try to turn her to the side to squeeze out the eggs which then he will pick up and place them in the bubblenest if any eggs fall down he will pick them up, the female will also help pick them up to put in the nest. if the female float on her side and is not moving for bit she is like in a trance releasing the eggs. make sure you have a bare bottom tank so they pick up any drop eggs. when they are finish remove the female otherwise the male will kill her. put her back in her tank so she can heal from her wounds. the male will do the rest. just becareful when the fry hatch , keep an eye on the male to see if he is one of those males who eat their young, if that happens get him out of there and raise the fry without the male. while the male is waiting for the eggs to hatch you are not suppose to feed him it takes the eggs about 24 hours to hatch after all the eggs have been placed in the bubblenest

The temp is around 80. I have a few 1" tall javamoss looking fake plants.

I guess they are doing everything you are saying that is normal. Male just chaseing the female around, and when the female hides he goes and continues building the bubble nest.

Found a pic that could prove that my betta is not preg.

And the ovispositor is there.

Wow phises, the side you gave me is really helpful.

And this caught my attention.

!!!....do you think mine could be one of thos? Or if its a male it would flare up and attack back rather then run away?

Exactly WHAT are you talking about? The pic you posted was a ROYAL BLUE... True green is EXTREMELY rare and looks NOTHING like the pic that you presented...

Bettas dont get "pregnant"...They are not livebearers... ALL female Bettas have eggs ALL THE TIME. Once they are released via mating or their own effort it takes about 10 days for them to develop eggs again.

I dont know but thats what the site said...ima email them and ask...weird

Also it was a joke with the "ahem" part..dont know why your getting mad.

I don't think I would ever try to spawn bettas in a one gallon container....no room at all for the female to get away from the male...or....vice versa....

I would say a 5 is the smallest that I would use, but that's just me....and plenty of plant's and a cave of some type.

On the plaket being mistaken for female thing....yeah, I've had that happen to me the first time I purchased a "female" betta.....lol.....turned out to be a male placket. Beautiful royal blue fella ! I wondered why he got that "gleam" in his eye when I put him in a tank with 2 "other" females.....
Look at the ventral fins....if they are very long than it could be a male. Females usually have shorter ventral fins...but not always. I have one female gold betta with longer ventral fins. I know it's female because of the ovipositor and the girlish figure...lol. Females have a different body shape than the males. Once you know the difference it's easy to tell just by that....usually....there's always the exception.

The white spot shouldn't actually be on the "FIN"...but rather on the body just behind the ventral fins. I'm sure that's what you meant when you spoke about a white spot.

Usually the male is the aggressor, but if the female rejects him....you'll KNOW it ! She'll rip into him like no tomorrow and the poor fella will be left nursing a much less impressive set of finnage.

If you want to breed your bettas, I would set up at least a 10 gallon as a spawning/fry tank.....that way all you have to do is remove the female after spawning...and then the male after the eggs hatch.....and you won't have to remove the fry to something else. they'll be able to grow out in the 10 for awhile. Make sure you have a seeded sponge filter in the tank, and bare bottom tanks are best for fry. Easier to keep clean and also the fry can more easily see any food you put in there for them.

If you use a 10gallon as a spawning tank, you can use the glass from a hurricane lamp to seperate the male and female until they're ready to spawn.

Good luck, have fun....and think ahead to what you're going to do with all those fry when they need to be seperated.... ;)

okay here we go people tipstylez and the mightyqueenpixie you both are right about what you say. We are going technical now this is the deal your is consider a royal blue but here is the catch some royal blue are solid and other have black mask. You have steel blue which have 2 blue gene and royal blues have one green gene and one blue gene. The green betta which indeed rare have two green genes. That is why some not me call them green bettas and majority calls them royal blue even though you have a slight green wash in them and sometimes a red wash in them. www.bettysplendens.com a member of the IBC also tipstylez if you really want to breed them correctly I can recommend a website where you only have to pay for shipping roughly between 10-25 dollars and you give them 3 choices such as CT and color you would like or if you prefer HM bettas same thing color you would like but remember you can only give 3 choice self explanatory. Some have gotten two pairs for breeding but in general you will get one pair for breeding and they usually try to fill your desire type of betta and color choice. www.ibcbettapals.com oh by the way you do not have to join the IBC to get the betta for free beside the shipping of the fish. hope this help. Oh yes females carry eggs did not say they get pregnant the male fertilize the eggs and if the pic is correct you have a regular veiltail female not HM or CT female and I thought a vertical line means they are to young to breed.

heres my blue/green betta.

And i got some sad news...the female died
I guess the male really didnt like her, or petsmart gave me a bad betta.
