Hi. My Betta "Tiber" has hurt himself again. I've only had him 14 days and he's torn off his pelvic fins and tonight he apparently wedged himself under the rocks and tore off one of his Pectoral Fin (body parts based on this betta biology site > http://www.bettafishcenter.com/Betta-Biology.shtml). He is in bad shape. His body is all swollen from the damage he's done. He can hardly swim at all now. All he's got left is that one Pectoral fin. It is the saddest thing I've ever seen. The tank he is in has had two other betta's in it before him and none of them ever hurt themselves on any of the decorations or rocks. It's like I got the lowest functioning Betta ever. I'm still crazy about him but I can't stand to see him suffer. What is the right thing to do? PLEASE HELP ME HELP HIM. Thanks.

I feel so helpless. I need someone to help me. Tiber is suffering and I want to make the right choice to help him. Am I supposed to euthinize him or will he survive. He doesn't look like he's going to make it. I can't let him suffer anymore. Crying won't help because I've tried that. I guess I'll keep praying and hope that someone can give me some advice.

I know you are worried and it is hard to feel so helpless. I don't really know what to tell you to help him besides some salt, higher heat (82 or so) and maybe melafix to help him heal faster.

I just wanted to be sure you got a response and knew someone was praying with you.

I hope your little guy does better soon and has a speedy recovery to health. :(

If my betta hurt himself as badly as Tiber has, I would euthanize him. He's suffering and probably unable to swim well with the fin missing. The fin will probably not grow back at all.

It's up to you. He may recover. IME he most likely will not. Those are pretty grevious injuries.

I am so sorry that you and Tiber are going through this.

It's really hard to say what would be the right thing to do.

If he's having trouble swimming up to get air, maybe it would be best to euthanize him rather than letting him suffocate.

What a tough situation.

Thanks for responding. It's morning now and the situation has gone from really bad to a lot worse. After removing almost everything from his tank last night (except something for him to hide in) he has torn his other pectoral fin very badly. He is still swimming up for air but it is very difficult for him and when he is finished he lays down on the bottom like he is dead. I've never had a betta do this, ever. I don't understand. I will probably have to euthinize him tonight. Say a prayer.
Thanks, Bridget

Can you lower the water level in his tank so he doesn't have so far to swim for air? This might help him get through the day until you can make a decision on euthanizing.
