I just purchased a black aquarium backing (the acrylic shiz), and ever since I put it up about 10 mins ago, my betta has been flaring at himself now that he sees his reflection. Will he stop doing this after a bit? If not, is this unhealthy? I don't want to stress him out

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe if he is flaring that means he is healthy. My betta always does the same thing (flares) whenever he goes my black hang on filter.

It shouldn't be harmful, and when he gets bored he will stop flaring. Nothing to worry about. :)

Yea, he has stopped for the most part. Now it looks like his gills are coming out a tiny bit like he was a normal non-labrynth fish (what's the word for that?). I was just scared that he'd stop flaring, cause my last betta wouldn't react to a mirror I held in front of him. I'm just scared of him getting used to it or unlearning this instinct, but I don't know (and doubt) if that's possible.

They can flare their gills too. Infact, that's a typical breeding motion.

Don't be worried, you just have a heathly betta.
