betta question

my girlfriend has a betta and hes pritty young and she has him in a bowl and she cleans the bowl every otehr day or so because hes blowing bubbles for a bubble nest and the water gets outragiously dirty any ideas help
 
The betta will make a bubblenest when he's a happy fish. it's a sign that she's doing everything right. He thinks you're destroying his work of art. The bubbles don't mean that the tank is dirty. Cleaning it out every other day if he is in a bowl is great.
He's probably thinking " I wish these crazy people would leave my nest alone"

I have to disagree. Bowls, under almost every circumstance, are not appropriate homes except for the smallest of the small fish (least killifish, for example, which only need the filter, not the heater)... bettas are really not one of them. They need a heater and a filter, which you will be hard pressed to find a good filter for the bowl, let alone a heater. I would convince her to at least get a 2.5g w/ filter and heater, have her cycle it, and move the betta in. It's amazing how happy they are when they have plenty of space to move around in. For now, her cleaning regime sounds okay, as long as she isn't taking out all the water and disinfecting the gravel or decor.
 
ditto. You could get an eclipse system with everything in it if you like simplicity, or a 2.5g tank and an aquaclear mini and 50 watt heater... there are lots of options. But get him out of the bowl as soon as you can and he'll be a happy camper.
 
For a single betta in a 5 gallon tank a heater is important, but you can get away without having a filter as long as you do water changes every few days. Add some live plants and it will be even better. Of course a filter is great but if cost is an issue I would rather suggest the heater.

At the very least geta really big goldfish bowl.
 
I have rescued two bettas. They both needed time to adjust from small cups to a bigger tank with heaters and filters. Took about 4 days Then they were acting like fish and actually swimming.

I'm opposed to small bowls for bettas and do note that my bettas in their 2.5 gal tanks make bubble nests and "appear" to be healthy, happy fish.
 
Are there any fish that will get along well with a Betta in a 5 gallon tank? What about guppies? I had my Betta in with two danios but he didn't look happy so I put him back in his bowl, but after reading these posts I feel guilty. I was thinking of getting rid of the Danios after I cycle the tank and putting the betta back but I'd like to put a few other fish in as well? Will guppies work?
