Betta - short tail? Different type maybe?

All the named varieties are B. splendens. The other species don't have the extended finnage. Nor do wild B. splendens for that matter, but that's the species which has been selectively bred for finnage.

:iagree: There are some short fin varieties that are out there along with B. Splenden, but that particular one is definitely B. Splenden.

[pedant] splendens [/pedant]. The 's' is part of the name, not a plural marker. If it were used in the plural it would be splendentes, but I digress.

Ditto sapiens. No such thing as a "Homo sapien".

:evil_lol: If you want to get technical, variety is a subspecies classification. So you were talking about the genus which is supraspecific. However, there are problems here because the idea of a species is really an explanatory hypothesis. But, there's enough digressing going on here. :evil_lol:
