OK... I've a 55gal with danios, corys, and 2 dwarf gourami.

One of the children child wants to get a Betta...

A site search has turned up nothing that directly addresses this question, so I thought I'd make a new thread in the newbie forum.

I know male Betta's are aggressive to each other and to SOME other fish, and all the threads I've seen have addressed 10 gal aquariums or smaller.

Will the Betta (a male, most likely) be likely to coexist with my other fish?

Thanks in advance for your input/wisdom/opinions. :)

I have my male betta with corys with no problems. I think that the answer depends on the personality of the betta-- you will probably have better luck with the large tank that you describe. I'm not sure that I would put a Betta with gouramis, but I have no experience with that combo, so not too sure. Good luck with the project. I'll be interested to see what others have to say.

There isn't a maximum sized tank, but there is a minimum. Minimum should be 2.5 but some will recommend 5 gallon tank as minimum. They will kill each other, but sometimes they get along with other fish. It really depends on the betta and what type of fish you are keeping.

If you want to put him in your 55G community, I wouldn't. First because you have Dwarf Gouramis which are similar to bettas and they will fight. But, in that big of tank, I don't know the outcome of it, but I wouldn't. Also, your danios might pick on your bettas tail, so that's another thing to keep in mind.

Lastly, I'd just get a small 5 gallon tank for your daughter. They don't cost much and will be a great home for your betta. It would be cool to let your daughter decorate the tank so she will still be interested. With the 5 gallon tank you can get some interesting stocks such as shrimps and snails. And even create a small planted tank!

I do agree with Chris in the fact that I do not believe your gouramis would get along with a betta. I do not however agree with the comment he made about putting habrosus cories in a 5g. Although they are pygmy sized cories, i don't think the footprint of a 5g is big enough for even a small schoal of them.

I agree with you on the Cories. I was hesitating on putting it there. That's why I kinda threw the snail and shrimp idea (although some of the smaller snails will get eaten) The cories would be fine in a 10G with the betta though.

I would think that female bettas in a 55 with DGs wouldn't be an issue...a male..maybe but doubtful.

hmm... the two gouramis have staked out opposite ends of the tank as their respective "territories"... although they get along fine together at feeding time (and could care less about the other fish)... perhaps throwing a third territorial/aggressive fish into that mix wouldn't be so great. I was just thinking that it might not matter since they were different species.

Maybe just some guppies... still have big colorful tails, just a smaller fish.... (and she could have several of them instead of just the one.)

Danios are nippy too
