im thinking about getting a small betta tank (about 1g or so) and keeping 1 male betta and maybe a few ghost shrimp (will they get eatten by the betta?) and i was wondering what you guys thought. i dont want to overstock the 10g anymore than i have to so i was thinking that a 1-2 g. tank would be good for these specs.

thanks,
Troy

I think that's a great idea....I have several 1 and a couple of 2 gallon betta setups that work well. Just be sure to keep on top of water changes. Here's a few pics for some ideas....

One with live plants...

silk plants and gravel....

The two on either side have plastic plants..these particular fish haven't had a problem with them, but plastic isn't really recommended because they can tear betta fins...

This is a 2 gallon with live plants and echo-complete substrate under the sand (to support the plants) It's filled out quite a bit since taking this pic....

Hope these help....have fun !

very nice tanks. i might go with a hex shaped tank and i may do the substrate thing. i will also look for a unique betta. also... would ghost shrump be ok with a betta?

thanks,
Troy

Sounds fine to me, my suggestion would be to go with live plants - they not only keep the water pristine, but are safe for those long, flowing fins. I'd also add a little HOB filter for water flow and water quailty.

My betta lived in my 1g cube for a few days while his new 10g home was being remodeled... here's a pic:

If you pick up a compact fluorescent desk lamp at WalMart for ~$20, you can add just about anything you like. My only caveat is that bigger leaves will make your tank look smaller, and stem plants can outgrow the tank rediculously quickly.
I like the simplicity of Java moss and Anubias barteri var 'nana' myself. In my tank the background is a stem plant, Bacopa australis, that requires loads of pruning. The others just take care of themselves - the Anubias is attached to a small log, it's very slow-growing and hasn't needed cutting back yet. Moss is easy to prune - yank out a handfull when it's too large for your liking, and pass it on to a friend.

Very nice setups, I am very impressed.

And EMG when are you gonna come by and redesign my tanks. ;)
I have a 55 planted tank that needs some over hauling. :D

LOL...you pay my airfare and put me up and feed me while I'm there..and I'll think about it.... ;)

Oh...and water sprite is a nice plant for smaller tanks. It doesn't need alot of lighting..at least in my experience... it looks great and sucks up alot of nitrates too.

I definitely think live plants are better than fake...if you can go for it....go for it...lol :D

Tricksterpup, that's very similar to one that I have, there are a lot of models to choose from. I've got a smaller one as well. Both hold 13W bulbs, which seems to be enough for happy, healthy plant growth in tiny tanks.
