It all depends on your set up and such. i have a betta in my 29 Gal. with various different tankmates, including 2 other anabantoids; Gold gourami & Blue dwarf Gourami. He gets along just fine with all the other fish but has taken in interest in the blue dwarf gourami because i think she might be a female. whenever he catches sight of her he flairs up and shows off and they end up chasing each other around the tank 
I'd say just make sure you have a nice area set up for the betta personally. i have a fake floating plant set up and he loves to just chill out up there and lay on the leaves
