I currently have a 55 gallon tank which I plan to stock with only angelfish and a cory or two. However, I have a growing fascination with Bettas. Since I don't want to mix a betta with the load I will have in my 55 gallon, what size tank would be appropriate to house a betta? Those tiny bowls they have bettas in are absolutely atrocious. I want something bigger but not too big, but something where the betta could be 100 percent comfortable.

they make some excellent mini tanks that are relatively cheap... i think you could probably do a 2 1/2 glass and get away with it, anything larger would be a bonus. they also sell them in acrylic or as prefab tank setups (eclipse and others).

i personally would prefer 5 or 10 and set it up as a "real" tank, probably with a cleanup crew and maybe a couple other non-aggressives.

someone else might have another opinion, i don't do alot with bettas.

5-10 gallon tanks are nice for bettas. With a 10, you could add a few smaller fish as well. Keep in mind that larger tanks are stabler than smaller ones--the 10 will not require as much maintenance as the 5. If you do go with a 5, limit additions to small things, like shrimp.

Well...if you just want a betta, I wouldn't go any smaller than 2.5 gallons. However, I MUCH prefer the 2.5's that are "long"...ie a miniature replica of a 10g, rather than the taller ones. They give the betta "more" space, imo.

But, I too would suggest getting at least a five gallon so that you can add some other fish. You could do a betta and three cories (pigmy cories would be an even better choice, but any cories would be fine...though emerald cories get a little too big).

I'm waiting to get some more ten gallon tanks for my bettas and plan on having them mixed with neons, harlequins, glow lites, adfs, cories, etc. There are more options this way:)

I'm going to go with a 10 gallon set up. Fortunately, the LFS is having a sale on their 10 gallon packages and I have just enough room for it!
