betta tankmates

Our current tanks are listed below. My 4 year old misses our betta who died 6-9 months ago and wants to get another, this time a blue female. I've got a 5 and a 10 gallon tank that are currently empty, so I can separate her if need be. I've got a few questions:

If I moved the inhabitants of the 20 high to a 29, could a betta do okay in it? I've not seen the dwarf gourami pick on anyone ever (we've had him maybe 3 months), we've had no neon deaths in that time, and I haven't seen the swordtail pick on anyone either. The swordtail is on the small side. We got him from a feeder tank over a year ago and I wonder if he may be a little stunted. He's only about 2 1/2 inches including a long tail.

Is there likely to be any trouble between BN plecos and a betta? One BN pleco chases other fish, but he stays at the bottom of the tank.

Would harlequin rasboras be okay with a betta?

Other tankmate suggestions?

What about a few female bettas in a betta only 10 gallon? I've read it's okay to have 3 or more females? How many could I have in a 10? My 2 choices of petstores I would buy fish from are Petsmart (The one here keeps their bettas in itty bitty cups with blue water, but the rest of their fish seem well cared for and healthy, their staff is knowledgable and we've had good survival rates with fish we've bought there. They've got some very nice looking bettas of the kind my son wants.) or a non-chain store that keeps their male bettas in quart jars with clear water and if I remember right the female bettas are several of them in one tank. I haven't been back across town to check, it's been several months since I've been to that one, but I remember them as looking healthy, but not as beautifully colored, no nipped fins. If we go with more than one female betta, would it be better to get them from the second store since they're used to sharing a tank with other female bettas?

If we get multiple female bettas, I've read bettas are more likely to be nippy with fish the same color as themselves? Is this true with female bettas, too, so it would be best to get an assortment of colors?

It seems there is a lot of conflicting advice online about this -- because it apparently depends so much on the betta's individual personality.

It's true. Like they say, each being is unique. Even bettas can behave differently from each other regardless of their genders.

Generally, females do fine in a community tank, and from what I've seen, males to fine for the most part as well UNLESS you have any other sort of labarynth fish in the tank, a family of fish which gourami fall into. You should be ok, but I would watch how the female betta and the gourami interact for the first couple of hours and be ready to removee her if need be.
