I am interested in getting some bettas. How much room do you suggest a betta to have. I know those half gallon containers they sell as betta homes are too small and would like to have a tank for comfortable for them. would a 2.5 with a divider be suitable for 2 or is that more of a 1 betta home. Im also considering a 5gal with a divider if a 2.5 wouldnt work. But if I decide on seperate containers for each what size would be suitable? Also, what about a heater? do they required one or is it only in larger tanks that heaters should be used? Im also considering getting some ADF's for the bottom if I get a 2.5-5gal minibow. Any other info that Im missing I should know about as well?

2.5g tanks are suitable for a single betta. Yes, they need to be heated. Bettas are tropical fish and prefer temperatures in the 70-82F range. (anywhere in the mid-70's is fine). for a 5G you can purchase 25W submersible heaters.

I think you could get away with doing a divided 5G tank for two bettas, provided it wasn't a tall or a hex tank. Just make sure the divider goes above the water level by an inch or two, because bettas will jump.

10g for a single betta seems to be excessive. If I have room Id get a 10g and divide it into 2 or 3 compartments but I dont have the room right now. I dont like tall or hex tanks so I avoid them, they dont give enough horizontal room for fish to swim. I will probably go with a 5g minibow and make a divider for it.

a dwarf puffer in a 5 gallon tank has a bigger home than many schooling fish that are recommended for 10 gallons.

Small fish require smaller space and a larger fish like a Betta shouldnt be an exception simply because it can survive in tight spots.

You see them sold in cups and shipped in little baggies because they can tolerate it and they cannot be tanked together like many other fish but that doesn't mean thats where you should keep them!

That is a misconception easily abused.

Ohya,
5 gals for two bettas that are dvided is fairly generous imo. You still have plenty of room to make their home fascinating so they won't so easily get bored! Be sure to add depth (have three senses of dept. Back, front and middle).

They will surely explore but bettas tend to stay near the top eh...

Personally if you want 2 i'd get 3 and divide a 10 gallon but if you want a 5 gal the tank would look its best heavily planted with just one betta and Amano shrimp.

(make sure the tank is long. Bettas benefit more from length than height and its something that can make a 5 gal a decent home or a crappy one)

or do what i did buy 1 gallon containers for 2 fish its eaiser and easy to clean
THIS IS A TERRIBLE IDEA. Don't follow this bad advice.

A 2.5 gallon tank is suitable for 1 betta. A 5 g for 1 betta is even better.

You could divide a 5g for 2 bettas, but make sure there are some plants blocking the divider so that the males (if you're getting males) don't have to see each other all day (seeing other males can get them pretty angry). Warning: putting ADF's with a betta may not work as some bettas are very territorial and do not tolerate tankmates.

Bettas do require a heater. A 25 watt heater would work well for either the 2.5g or the 5g.

I have a planted five gal with a 25 watt heater,it looks very good,I have one small male betta, ghost shrimp, and two male endler/guppy crosses(I didnt have anywhere else to put them).
the tank has driftwood,it stays around 79-80f....my betta is always active(not laying on the bottom like a betta in a small unheated tank),he's constantly exploring and chasing bits of duckweed on the suface :D

Please do not put a betta in a 1 gal. container. It is just too small. The smallest I would go with is a 2 gal tank for a single betta. Bigger tanks are even better for the betta. I have mine in a planted two gallon complete with floating plants which they happen to love by the way and he has been there for quite some time and seems very active and happy every day.

Yea, I plan on getting nothing smaller than 2gal per betta.
