Hi Guys!

Bought a Betta (Jimmy Kane) two weeks ago tomorrow and he is very happy and seems to be enjoying his 20 gallon home :) His tankmates are five panda cories (The Five Muskateers :D), which, apart from intense curiosity on Jimmy's part, have been left alone :)

My question is this : I bought some (quite expensive on my budget :D) flake food and some freeze dried bloodworm. My Betta ignores both types of food. I began to get worried until I noticed that he is quite happily eating the sinking pellets that I put in for my Muskateers. Also, any peas that I put in for the lot of them, quickly become Jimmy's Peas.

Now, I'm not worried really, because he *is* eating, but I was wondering if any of you have this behaviour with your Betta's or other fish? Have I got a nutty guy? (well, I *know* he's nutty, but you know what I mean :D)

Thanks Guys

Mine was really picky about food too!! I spent alot of money trying to find something he liked. He might still be adjusting, so I wouldn't worry about it yet. What are the sinking foods you're feeding? I would also try again occasionally with the FD bloodworms, my betta loves those. You could soak them in water for a minute or so to soften them up, that might help!

Hi! :)

Um... *goes to get the food for the correct name*... ok, the pellets I'm feeding at the moment are JMC Catfish pellets "A specially formulated etc. Ideal for bottom feeding coldwater/tropical fish" :)

The flakes he just ignores, or flares at, or flares at and then ignores :) and they are TetraMin tropical fish flakes "Ideal for all tropical fish". Obviously my guy hasn't read the packet :)

Lastly, the freezedried bloodworms are King British ones, also "Ideal for tropical etc."

Hehehe my Jimmy just seems to love peas :) and catfish pellets :) Maybe he thinks he's a catfish... :)

Thanks for your help!

When you first buy betta they are small and have tiny mouths and little tummy's that don't really hold alot. I feed mine two or three times a day. He's gotten used to seeing my hand over the water. Its his signal to come up and get a bite. I crush the dried bloodworms between my fingers to make them small enough for him. He grabs a couple bites and then the greedy white clouds snap up what's left.
I drop a bottom feeder tab (catfish tablet) for the 2 ottos that have no algae left to eat and he shares with them. Sometimes I drop in some frozen daphnia thawed out in a cup of water. All the fish cruise the bottom for what sinks.

I wouldn't worry for your betta. I'm sure he's getting enough for his size :)

Maybe you could try to feed frozen bloodworms (after thawing them)... my betta loves those... I feed Hikari Betta Pellets and frozen blood worms with no problems, but he has never been a picky eater anyways... he is more like a little pig ;)

He'll probably ignore the flakes. They make special betta flakes, but mine didn't even like those!

Thanks for all your help guys! :D

I'll try crushing up the bloodworms, see if that makes a difference :)

He *is* eating, *loves* peas in little bits, so I'm not overly concerned, glad it's not just my guy that's fussy though :D

Thanks again for your help!

Try feeding him some common foods from the grocery store if he is really picky. Things like frozen fish (I use haddock), mussels, clams, shrimp, etc can be bought cheaply and last a long time.

Mine was fed the betta bits as soon as he was introduced to his 10 gal tank. He then got a tank mate, a cory. I dropped small pieces of algae wafers in the tank for the cory and the betta took a liking to them and now is eating all the food. He's a pig.
