The other night, we went to PetSmart looking for a couple of things - and as usual, we came home with way more than we expected to. LOL

Long story short, we have a new Betta. It's a beautiful red and blue CT. His tankmates are 1 Mystery snail and 3, um, 2 Ghost Shrimp.

This evening I noticed something amiss on the Betta. I grabbed a magnifying glass and checked him out. He looks to have a damaged scale or two on his head. His eyes are fine, I was concerned about that.

The only thing I can come up with is that he sustained an injury that is more or less realted to the demise of the Ghost Shrimp.

Do Ghost Shrimp have any defenses? Could it have actually caused an injury to the Betta - "Last Great Act of Defiance" type thing?

"Why yes, this is my first go at Ghost Shrimp.... How could you tell?" ;)

OK, OK, I know the rules... :)

Hah let me tell you about my Betta (Arlo) vs. 6 or so ghost shrimp. When I finally took them out, 3 remained.. Arlo was full no doubt. I should have taken them out when they started disappearing, but for some reason or another I turned devilish and let them be. That was until I witnessed one of the larger ghost shrimp (which were all pretty young) hitch hiking on Arlo's tail to get to some floating betta pellets. He just clamped on and enjoyed the ride. Arlo is apparently a docile betta and didn't seem to peeved, but there was a small tear in his tail from this freeloading shrimp.

It is possible that your MIA ghost shrimp threw on the boxing gloves and threw down. The imagery alone is entertaining enough for me to believe it!

...and that Ghost Shrimp said, "Yo' dead, suckah; ah'm a gunna bus' you up!"

Seriously, I've had a mild-mannered, personable Betta pick off Ghost Shrimp (ate 5 of 6, had to rescue the last one which mothered two broods). Also, I've had Ghosts latch onto the flowing fins of a really timid Betta in an attempt to get a quick snack.

hahaha.....ghost shrimp as pets....i get about 100 a week to feed my eels and my other fish love em too

oh my bettas adore 'shrimp snackies' (that is a direct quote from my dad). He had bought a dozen of them for the 75G tank and upon finding them the betta made it her mission to eat each and every one of them! It's kinda funny to watch too... she just sucks them down like a short piece of spaghetti!!
