Betta with velvet

How's this for a solution to the heat and light problem ? I used a planter to cover him with and set his cup up on top of one of my striplights. I've been keeping an eye on the water temp just by feeling it and so far it's a comfortable temp...definitely warmer than without this setup...but not too warm. I'm just hoping he doesn't get knocked off of there ! :eek:

I cleaned and washed up the tank he was in very thoroughly....rinsed and rinsed the gravel as much as I could but it has a nasty smell to it....I put it aside in a plastic bag to give back to the teacher. I'll suggest that she just throws it out. I put some nice purple/blue gravel in the tank that I had laying around...along with some fake plants I'll probably never use again that match the gravel rather nicely. I'll bring this all back to her when this fish gets through this..I think he will, he's looking much happier already.

Here's a pic of that nasty gravel....I'm thinking it may be that glow in the dark stuff...but whatever it is it has a smell I can't really describe..chemical mixed with dirty water kind of smell...

Here's a pic of the tank setup with some extra stuff I had laying around. One of the plants is silk, the other is a very soft plastic material...I don't think the betta will have a problem with it...

Hmmm...geee...I have a pretty purplish/blue colored betta that would match that setup quite nicely...lol.... :rolleyes:
 
Nice! Unless my eyes are playing tricks on me little velvet fish is the same color combo as my Sushi-Two ... blue/red?

Velvet has an out of host shelf life that I think is fairly short, so the gravel will probably be ok ... maybe soak it in some vinegar?

And I know you're just trying to be thoughtful, but really I can't imagine that the teacher will want a bag of stinky fish gravel back. Maybe you can give her/him a call and say "I'm going to toss this." That way you don't have to worry about it. I actually think if you just tossed it, it wouldn't be a problem ... I'm just thinking about how much I'd hate it if someone handed me a bag of stinky fish gravel. ;)
 
Well....my thinking is that it's her gravel...and if she wants to throw it away....fantastic !....but some folks get upset if you do something like that without asking....so...I'll just give her a bag of stinky gravel....lol.... I don't think she'll be too offended since I'm "giving" her the replacement gravel along with the plants. The only thing she had in there was that ugly gravel, water and the fish. It would take a pretty shallow person to complain....lol....

I forgot to mention that the stuff I'm treating the betta with is called "ick away" and the active ingredient is "malachite green in aqueous solution"..(whatever that is)...so it should work well on the velvet along with the salt.

And..yep....he's a blue/red betta. The tips of his fins are looking a bit rotted, but I think that'll clear up pretty quickly now that he's in some clean fresh water.

Hrm ... I'm not sure if malachite green is effective for velvet or not (it's good for flukes, ich ... and some fungus I think). I think you'd be better off with something containing copper sulphate.

Poor guy. I'm happy you're tanking to time to get him all better. What a lucky fishy.

WOW...you sure set that tank up looking NICE!!! The teacher will be thrilled. How incredibly kind of you, not only are you caring for her sick fish, you are upgrading the poor guys environment. That is just so sweet!!!
