I have been researching peaceful community fish. I haven't seen anywhere that bettas can fit into this community. Can they? Are they aggressive toward other fish?

They can be agressive, and can be picked on by others...I defintly wouldnt call them a "peaceful community fish". Sometimes it can work, if there is enough room in the tank, enough cover, no fish with long flowy fins or nippy fish; but I wouldnt try it unless you have another tank to put the betta in if it doesnt work.

I tried bettas as "community" fish twice. First, it was just the betta and an algae eater. He picked on the algae eater until I moved the decor around then he pretty much left him alone.

Now, I have a betta in with Mollies and Cory Cats and he does fine. If you believe it, I'd say they're friends. It depends on the fish, but I agree with The Zoo 100% about having another tank to put the betta into if it doesn't work out.
