ahoyhoy all! long time no 'talk/see' !!!!!

i'm still kicking, still have a tank (just recently downgraded to having just my 55 going), and still a fish geek! lol

haven't been around the forum here in quite a while! i see we've had some changes and i'm sure there are many new members amidst the old codgers haha.

for those that may remember Gus, my oscar, he sadly passed away just over a month ago due to a bacterial infection that i couldn't cure no matter what meds i threw at it. Gus was just over 7 years old. he had a good life. and as much as i was sad to see him go (i cried for two days straight. it was heartbreak having to euth him!), i'm kinda ok with not having a big messy fish for now.

my tank nowadays houses a nice placid community. 10 platys, two bn plecos, a juvenile sailfin pleco (guess he'll be my next big messy guy in years to come lol), albino rainbow shark, four cories, what i believe is a cana snail (advertised as an apple snail but the lil bugger at ALL my plants haha), and a malaysian trumpet snail that defies the norm for his species (he's over 5 years old now!). some of these fish i've had now for 7 to 8 years! must be doing something right. the platys and the sailfin are new, and the others were moved from my 20 long. the rainbow shark is about 8 years old now, one bn pleco is 7, and her daughter is now 5 yrs. i had a male bn for a bit and although i didn't set them up for spawning, they did it anyway in a community tank and i kept back the 'runt of the litter'.

funny enough, i have no bettas right now. over the years since i got into the hobby (in november 2007), i've had many bettas. i think if i count back it's been at least 15! wow. i'm sure i'll end up adding one to my 55. i've never been without a betta for long :)

here's my tank these days, and some of my finkids. it may be a simple setup, but i like the ease of maintenance. and i'm finding the platys have almost as much personality as my big O did. love how they recognize me and come to say hi at the glass. even if it isn't feeding time, lol.

Nice to see ya back!

Great shots!

thanks Bob! took them with my phone and they turned out way better than i anticipated being as it's a samsung model that's about 3 years old now lol.

isn't he a cute lil guy rufioman? i think he figures he's king of the tank already, and makes the other fish get out of the way, even big 'sharkie' haha.

Bare bottom tank? How's it working for detritus removal and algae?

Just curious. When I had cories, they loved rooting around and digging, and my BNs tend to excavate. I have sand now, which is more difficult to vac.

i had sand in the 20 long i moved the cories out from. they don't seem to mind not having substrate now. as for the bn's, they tend to stay attached to the three wood pieces i have in there most of the time and were the same in the 20. the middle piece of wood got moved from the 20 and they were constantly on it.

as for detritus removal, super easy! no need to gravel vac or swirl on top of a sand bed. i just move decor around to get mulm build up out from under it while siphoning with a piece of tubing. many tanks i've kept bare bottom over the years and i tend to prefer it.

algae- i don't get any lol. no live plants, sunlight does not hit the tank at all, and i keep a fairly set lighting schedule with just 'daylight' t8 bulbs and water change schedule, so extra nutrients don't have a chance to build up in the water (that's what causes algae).

Hey! Great to see you back. Keep those pics coming :)
