Bettas & disease

When I first got my Betta I kept him in a 1/4 gallon bowl. He seemed to be doing very well. Of course I was doing daily water changes too. But within 2 weeks I felt sorry for him to live in something so confined and purchased a 10 g tank. He is like a totatlly different fish. Really getting quite a personality. Take the plunge and upgrade, you won't be sorry. He resides with some tankmates (neon tetras&white clouds) and gets along fine. BTW in his bowl as well as the tank he resuses to eat anything except freeze dried bloodworms and peas.

Peas, like the vegetable peas? I've never read that before. I think I have some frozen blood worms left over from my dwarf puffer I had, so I'll try to give him some of those. I understand what you all are saying about a bigger tank, the problem is, I already have bigger tanks everywhere else in the house :p. The only place for him to be is in my bathroom, and the counter is not big enough for a regular 5 gallon tank. They don't make tall 5's do they? :p I do change his water at least once a week. I've always just had "regular" tropical fish so I'm not sure about this, but do they make filters that are less powerful that the regular ones? I tried putting an airline in just so there's circulation of the water, but it was way to powerful for the little tank & it seemed to stress him out, so I removed it.

hey Jess7 did you just say the frogs stand on your bettas head? i dont exactly get what you mean but its sounds like something i gotta see

Yeah, occasionally. It's pretty funny. The frogs don't put a lot of pressure on them. You know how the frogs will swim up quickly and then kinda just float around, well sometimes the betta will get in their way and they'll lightly have one of their feet on their heads. Wish I had pictures of it...

Hi CivicChick

Following are the few things that you can try
1) Give you betta a bigger place to live in - they really really appreciate that.
2) Leave your betta whereever he is and (if possible) get yourself another betta in another bowl and place these bowl besides eachother - this keeps them pepped all throughout the day.
3) Change his diet to worms - they simply cannot ignore it. (and even he does dont worry - idea 1 and 2 should surely change his temperament)

All the best

Peas, yes the frozen ones. Just let them sit out until they thaw and then remove the skin. I like to cut them into fairly small pieces. He really seems to enjoy them but just as a treat.

Eclipse makes nice 5 gal hexes. My girlfriend got one for her betta, and it is great.
Look in to that, it was $35 at petsmart.

Hello Civic,

Aquascene makes a one gallon lighted tank which sells for about 10$ at Walmart that your betta would be fine in and it's small enough to fit on your bathroom counter I imagine. They are triangular in shape and you could slip it right into the corner. I keep the water warm in mine by keeping the light on all the time....my fish are fine with that...I have water sprite floating on the top to cut down on the light some for them.

I know everyone spazes out when someone says they keep a betta in anything smaller than a 5 or 10 gallon tank, but really....bettas can do very well in a one gallon, though I personally wouldn't go any smaller than that. The biggest issue for a smaller tank is the water temps...but if you can find a place to keep them where the temps don't fluctuate too much they should be fine. The water in my 1 gallon tanks are a steady 78..I have 3 of them set into one of the cubby areas of my computer desk. It's a snug spot and the heat from the lights on the tanks keeps it nice and cozy in there for them.

I bet I'm going to get all kinds of grief for leaving the light on all the time too....but hey...(*shrug*)...my fish are happy and healthy...and the ones I have in the 1 gallon tanks are just as active and happy as the ones I have in the larger tanks..with all kinds of personality too. Just be sure to do water changes at least twice a week in a tank that small. ;)

OK, so while I shop around for a new home for him, I bought some frozen blood worms. He loved them at first (and I'm sure he was hungry). But after a few bites, he did the same thing he's doing with the pellets - he goes up to them, but he'll spit it right back out. Then he'll eat it again, and spit it out again. I'm puzzled...

He'll eat when hes hungry enough!! But I also had the same problem with my betta, the only thing he will eat is freeze dried bloodworms. I must have spent over 20 dollars on 4 or 5 different foods and even fasted him for several days to try and make him hungry so that he would eat, and he would just spit it out a second later, then swim to the front of the glass and look at me, like you expect me to eat that crap?!?! So, now he gets the B.W's and the occasional pea...
( I just ordered my LAST try of betta food last night online, so we'll see what happens, after that I'm DONE!!!)

I have these shirmp pellets for my Cory cats that my Betta has started to take monopoly over. You could try that.

He used to eat the BW's and then I moved him to the 10 gal and then he will eat those and the fish flakes and his new favorite is now the shrimp pellets that he steals from my lil corys.

Good lucky :o
