Hi, over the long weekend, my Bettas at work, in 2 seperate tanks, but almost side by side got up to some trickery.

I forgot and left the lids off. I do this because I sit next to a window and like to let them get more light from the sun that from the low watt tank lids.

My blue had actually jumped into my pink ones tank. I don't know how long. But when I came in this morning, The pink had some pretty tattered fins, and the blue had a hunk of scales missing by his head. But they were swimming side by side and showed no aggression as I look on in amazement.

Is it possible for one to establish dominance in a tank and then fighting will cease?

I am going to take them home and set them up better and keep and eye on them while they heal up. The missing scales on the blue is rather disturbing.

I've also wondered what would happen with two male bettas in the wild or in a large tank. Say 75+ gallons. Would one just stay on one side and the other on the other side...?

thats a really unique situation you have going on, It's possible but I dont know how/why it happens

I have seen two male bettas succesfully kept in a heavily planted 55 gal. They didnt seem to bother each other at all. When it was time to feed the would both go up to the top and eat right next to eachother with no agression. Very strange indeed.

The problem is their unpredictablity. One person can do it with some luck while 99% of all other bettas fight to the death or at least until one is severely beaten. They can also do fine for awhile and turn for no apparent reason. IMO it is best not to risk it.

I think given enough territory and hiding spots to break up field of vision you could have a pretty high success rate....but their personalities do seem to vary much more than other species.

Yes. Bettas are impredictible.

Amazing Houdini Betta

I went to lunch, before leaving I feed the bettas and I like to leave the lids off while I am at work. Both tanks have backgrounds taped to them so the Bettas cannot see each other in anyway.

Got back from lunch, the Blue had leaped back into the pink ones tank. And they werent all puffing up. They were just hanging out. When I take these guys home today to recoup and heal up  in a more controlled environment, I will space them to opposite sides of the room. :idea2:
