I have a male Betta currently in a 3g, heated and filtered. But I really want him to have some friends, and I've heard they can be housed with tetras. I know I would have to get a bigger tank, oc.

My questions are (lol):

- What fish can Bettas be kept with?
- And what size would I need? Like, for example, a Betta and 6 tetras?

(:

Cypriniformes
Harlequin rasboras (Trigonostigma heteromorpha)
Hengeli rasboras (Trigonostigma hengeli)
Espei rasboras (Trigonostigma espei)

Loaches
Kuhli loaches

Catfish (aside from corydoras and plecos)
Hara hara
Glass catfish
Agamyxis pectifrons

Characins
Black Neon Tetra(Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi)
Black Phantom Tetra(Megalamphodus megalopterus)
Cardinal Tetra(Cheirodon axelrodi)
Ember Tetra (Hyphessobrycon amandae)
Emperor Tetra(Nematobrycon palmeri)
Glowlight Tetra(Hemigrammus eryhthrozonus)
Green Fire Tetra (Aphyocharax rathbuni)
Green Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon simulans)
Head-and-Tail-Light(Hemigrammus ocellifer)
Kerri Tetra(Inpaichthys kerri)

Red Phantom Tetra(Hyphessobrycon sweglesi)
Rosy Tetra(Hyphessobrycon bentosi)
Rummy-Nose Tetra(Hemigrammus bleheri)
Rummy-Nose Tetra(Hemigrammus rhodostomus)
Rummy-Nose Tetra(Petitella georgiae)
X-ray Tetra(Pristella maxillaris)

Pencilfish (all species)
Hatchetfish (all species)

Cichlids
This seems a hit or miss. The following listed are possible but don't keep your hopes up they will thrive together. Do not mix if cichlids are in spawning mode.

Discus
Blue rams
Bolivian rams
Apistogrammas

Livebearers
Guppies
Platies
Mollies (not all will work)

Get a 10g for tetras and betta altogether.

Stocking 3 (for a 6 gallon)
1 male OR female betta
2 African Dwarf Frogs

That's from a discussion thread on here ^

Why can I put my male Betta in with two ADF's in a six gallon, and yet not 6 tetras? What about 4 tetras?

ADF's don't need quite as much space as a school of tetras, and 4 tetras isn't really enough for a school (schooling fish do better in larger groups).

Lupin has given a good first list of compatible fish. There are also lots of less common fish that would work. Bettas are basically OK if they can't swim as fast as the fish they are with and the fish they are with won't nip their fins. They ignore most bottom dwellers so those are also OK.
