Bettas & spotted Green Puffers--Tankmates?

Been awhile since I first posted, but I'd like to add that I recently went to our LFS, and got a REALLY good tankmate for my GSP. I got a spotted silver dollar fish--I think that's what it's called. It also lives in brackish water (of course, that must be a given for a tankmate!) and it has the same spotted type of markings as the GSP and a similar color. They get along sooooo good. As for now, it's just them 2 b/c it is a 10 gallon. I'm going to upgrade to a 20 gallon w/ in the next month or so.

Oh, BTW, the betta is still seperated from them, and that's how it's going to be. I'd rather keep them separated then find one of them dead. But my Betta is content :)

No betta in freshwater. Also, a GSP will kill it. Just about anything without long, flowing fins would be fine with a betta in a ten.

A GSP needs at least a 29gal by himself. They are very aggressive. They do need brackish water that will eventually increase to saltwater. You'll need to get marine salt and a hydrometer. Start him out at 1.004. Acclimate him slowly. Of course, the tank would already be cycled. They will only eat frozen and live foods, mostly bloodworms and pond snails (set up a small breeding tank) If they don't get something to wear down their beaks, you'll need to trim their teeth. HTH

If you can't give the GSP what it needs, take him back. If you really want one, then you can get another one when you're ready.
But not a DWARF puffer But they can still be mean. Also a tip. Puffers will NOT eat flake food. They eat bloodworms or worms.

Dwarf puffers, IMO are one of the meanest puffers for their size. They have been known to take "fin rides", on fish 20x larger!

Livewire, As far as your "spotted silver dollar", you really should know what you're buying there. It is probably a silver scat. They are extremely messy fish (the goldfish or oscar of the BW world). They grow as large as your outstreched hand & require at least 50g. Your GSP, as a 6" adult will require at least a 30g, so you've got a potentiol 80g worth of fish there. If you don't have plans to upgrade to that size in a couple of years, take it back, please. The amount of waste/toxins the scats produce, in a tank that's too small, will kill the more sensitive puffer. An upgrade of 20g won't work, even if they are small. Please research the adult sizes of the fish you are purchasing, before you buy them.

I agree those scats grow big and are very active robust fishes that are not necessarily peaceful in temperament either.

You are right Pufferpunk! I googled "Spotted Silver Scat", and saw the picture and it was the exact same as what I just bought. I am upgrading to a bigger tank very soon after this info.

Thanks for the heads up everyone. On the various different forums I have seen lots of threads about Scats, and now I'm interested about them. It is like the "goldfish" of the BW world, it doesn't seem as independant as a Puffer.

Plecos are strictly FW. GSPs require high-end BW-SW.
