bettas with dividers

on my birthday in may i bought 2 pretty male crown tail bettas. i got them to keep at my boyfriends, but it is getting hard to remember to get over there every few days to change the water. (they are in a double cup thing that is very small)so the other day i bought a 10 gal tank. the two that i have are red and the other is blue. i was thinking of getting a silver one, and making it a patriotic tank.would 3 be too many in a 10 gal? i have been looking in alot of the old forums, and i know that ADF are good with bettas, and so are pgny cories(sp?). my question is, would these tank mates be ideal to keep with the dividers?? their space will be kind of small. my brother had a frog(dont know what kind for sure) that just hid under plants alot, are ADFs like that?? also, what types of filters and heaters should i use in the little tank? if any one has some experience with bettas and the dividers, please let me know what would be some good choices. i thought the little cup thing i got from the LFS would be good, and now i see that it is not good. im just trying to be a good mommy ;)

Space wise divided in 3 10g tank should be fine with dividers for 3 fish. You coul add the frog thing, but they like companions, so you'd need at least 2 in each divided area (for the best situation). I don't know if it would stress the frogs to see other frogs divided away, as they like company. Maybe snails instead of frogs.

You do evrything else the same. get a 10g filter and heater, water test kit, decor etc. what you have to watch out for is one fish getting sick and contamination the whole tank. also be careful that it can't slip through the dividers. If you haven't seen them, they have little holes sothe water can pass through the tank still. If you haven't thought of this already, you might want plants and stuff for the bettas to chill in when they aren't flaring at each other.

Good luck, sounds like they will appreciate this more that the little bowl!
 
I agree with Lisa, it would be a bit small for other fish, but I think an ADF in each section would be ok. I have an ADF, but I don't see him all that often, but it seems like some people see theirs all the time. It might just depend on the frogs personality. Also make sure that the water level is not high enough for the bettas to manuver over top of the dividers, that just happened to someone else on here. I don't know if you have any plants with them now, but silk or real is the way to go. I had plastic with my betta a while back and even though it was not sharp at all, his fins look normal now with silk plants

Yeah, that sounds fine butterflylove. A 10 gallon divided into three parts gives you approximately 3.33 gallons of space per fish, and that is much more than those horrid cups that pet stores keep bettas in. I'm sure they will be very happy in their new home! Add a hardy plant in each section, a few rocks, and it should look great.

As for tankmates, the dwarf frogs are a great idea. I don't know for sure if they really need company, since I kept a solitary one for some time in a 1 gallon and it did really well. But it's amusing to see them huddled upon each other. :) Pygmy cories won't do as well since the tank is divided, which means less space for the cories to swim around.
 
If you get live plants, i'd recommend wisteria, not a lot of work and my betta loves to sit in it. i have had mine since Nov. with light being it' s only consideration (no co2 or fert.) and it has been broken, near death, replanted (and the broken piece planted and flourishing), transplanted, and it is still going strong.

definately silk if real isn't an option, though.
 
thanks alot you guys!!! i will def look into the wisteria at my LFS and look through all the dividers before bying some. what if i only split the tank in two, would that open up more space for other tank mates? i think i could then put 2 or more ADF in each side. purplesmurf, thanks for the pic, it will really help me out to get some more ideas. i kind of want this tank to be my own really creative type of tank. only i cant really come up with my own ideas out of no where, so i will keep lookin at other peoples tanks until i get a good combination. thanks again you guys! i will post some pics when i get it up and going.
